May 25 - Youth Day in Tito's Yugoslavia

In some cities of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia today, 40 years after the death of Josip Broz Tito, Youth Day is celebrated, which in the former state was celebrated as the birthday of the lifelong president.

Although officially born on May 4, May 25 was marked as his birthday. On that day, pioneers, youths, students and members of all genders of the SFRY army took part in the traditional sleds, which were held at the then JNA stadium.

As a rule, famous athletes and prominent young people would come out of the audience or from the center of the event, who would run through the stadium to the ceremonial stands where Tito, his wife and his closest associates were, firmly holding the Youth Relay in their hands.

The relay was designed differently each year, and included messages from SFRY youth from all the then republics to the president.

Tito took over the relay with a short speech, emphasizing that carried in the hands of the youth, it passed thousands of kilometers from Triglav to Gevgelija.
