The Roma from Belvil were compensated by the city of Belgrade for moving in 2012

After a five-year long legal battle, the two Roma were forced to move out of their homes in Belgrade and then housed in an abandoned warehouse in Nis. Belgrade Court of Appeals decides on monetary damages of 2,600 euros (plus interest)

The European Center for Roma Rights (ERRC) represented them and another person who has since died.

But the court did not take into account that the Roma live segregated and in dwellings for which they do not have any documents and are at risk of relocation.

"Although the damages may in some way partially compensate for certain rights of the plaintiffs, the courts continue to ignore a broader context of discrimination against Roma in Serbia," said Andrea Colak, an ERRC lawyer who worked on the case.
