Nobody comes to Germany to lie in an ominous social hammock there. Nobody, not even Romanian Roma, can confuse Neukölln, Dortmund-Nord or Duisburg-Marxloh with the land of milk and honey.
The motives for immigration are completely different. Yes, we want immigration. No, we have nothing against foreigners and also nothing against the Roma, who were ultimately victims of genocide and are persecuted in some places to this day. We need skilled workers, and we do not care about their origin or descent. What we don't want, on the other hand, is immigration into our social systems. There is a broad consensus that emerged from the CSU after a series of provocations, and it is a step forward in relation to what the angry citizens want. Just: “Immigration into the social systems” is in and of itself a tendentious scheme that poorly describes the real conditions. Nobody comes to Germany to lie in an ominous social hammock there. Anyone who lives in a south-eastern European slum and has perhaps grown up there is best to behave as slum dwellers all over the world do for good reasons: their existence is composed of a patchwork quilt. You do odd jobs, collect iron or bottles, do a little trade, apply for transfer payments, if there is such a thing. If that is not enough, begging, prostitution and petty theft may also be added. Basic Law of Survival The basic law of survival in the slum is: Never put everything on one card! A job, a wage replacement benefit - these are fleeting promises. You take them with you when you can. But it would be far too dangerous to change your place of residence because of a job or Hartz IV. The job or performance is quickly gone, and then you're left with nothing again. Everyone here has already had the experience: never give up the network, never let yourself be isolated! When things get serious, no government or employer will help me, only my family and maybe my closest friends will help. The poor immigrants from Romania and Bulgaria do not come to Germany for social benefits, but because you simply live better here. You come with family and close friends. To be on the safe side, they put their existence together here piece by piece. Only when they are better can they dare to give up this way of survival.
