In early October, a Roma couple were beaten on a bus. The torture would not have been known if a girl on FB had not shared this case as traumatic. None of the passengers on the bus helped those people. And according to all indications, the reason for the attack was only because they are Roma.
The attacks on Roma in the society pass somehow imperceptibly, or with very small fines, and in this case there are all elements of hatred and the institutions need to react, said the president of the Roma League and longtime activist Osman Balic.
- It is a fact that there are attacks much more frequent than what we hear or see. Even Roma organizations are confused by the amount of violence. Attacks with motives of hatred and intolerance are consequences of the social context and environment in which we live. We have attacks that seriously need to be dealt with by institutions such as the prosecution, the judiciary and the police. But they do not take anything, so they give xenophobes and thugs the wind in their backs, because they know that the sanctions are minimal, and most of them do not exist - says Balic.
