International Women's Day - a world holiday celebrated every year on March 8. It is a day to mark the struggle of women for economic, political and social equality with men.
The idea of celebrating a special day dedicated to women dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, and was especially insisted on by the socialist movement. The first Women's Day was celebrated on February 28, 1909 in the United States at the initiative of the Socialist Party of America. In 1910 Under the auspices of the Second International in Copenhagen, the First International Conference of Women was held and it was decided to celebrate International Women's Day, but without setting an exact date. The following year, March 19, 1911, this holiday was celebrated for the first time by more than a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. On March 8, 1913, women across Europe held peace rallies.
