Almir Tahiri is a regular young Roma man from Herceg Novi. He has graduated at the Political Sciences University and has studied in the Central European University in Budapest. He was an exchange student in the USA. During his studies in Podgorica, he was active in the civic sector, dealing with Roma policies in order to improve the situation of his community.
To be a Roma is to know what it means to face discrimination. To be a Roma is to feel discriminated on a daily basis, just because of the color of your skin.
They ask themselves, why are they going to university? when they as Roma are only capable to work as street cleaners. That’s what they said to me, why are you studying when you’ll end up cleaning the streets. I did not accept that. And, I did everything I could to obtain the diploma from the university.
Only I know how hard it was”, says Almir Tahiri. He’s an example that the human can do anything he wants if he has a will to do it and when he’s ready to make sacrifices.
