And as Ukrainian refugees, Roma suffer from segregation

Since the start of the war in Ukraine almost a hundred days ago, more than 6.8 million people have fled the war-torn country. Of the 43 million people in Ukraine, according to Human Rights Watch, an estimated 400,000 belong to the Roma population. When the war broke out on February 24, everyone was in the same danger, but according to international organizations, not in the same treatment.

As Human Rights Watch recently warned, Moldovan institutions target most Roma refugees separately from other people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The ERRC, a Roma-led organization working to combat anti-Roma racism, human rights abuses through Roma trials, research and advocacy, has also noted cases of segregation and poor living conditions in Moldova by Roma refugees from Ukraine.

"Moldova is the most obvious example of discrimination against public authorities that we have seen," Lee said.
