UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights Philip Alston cited Spain for its attitude towards the poor, noting that the country's post-crisis economic policies were the work of wealthy companies, but had a very negative impact on ordinary people.
Alston said Friday in Madrid: "Spain is doing well in the economic field"
"High GDP, high per capita income, and enormous total wealth. In the social field the story is different: Spain is at the bottom or near the bottom of other indicators "
Alston pointed out that the most problematic areas are housing, work, minimum wage and education. He said women, children, the Roma community and migrants are the most endangered.
He said he met with Roma groups "living in landfills" and migrant workers in the south of the country "who live in probably the worst conditions they have ever seen"
The Spanish government has not yet commented on the outcome of the report by this UN expert.
