Hundreds of residents in a building in Berlin have been quarantined after at least 54 residents tested positive for coronavirus, the city of Berlin said on Tuesday.
"So far, 54 cases of the infection have been identified, but we are still testing. This is a new dimension in any case when it comes to the spread of the infection," said Falco Lique, a city lawmaker in charge of health issues, in an interview with RBB.
He said the assessment of the extent of the infection would be difficult because it was not possible to determine how many people lived in the building.
"I don't think the tenants we met tell the truth about how many people really live here," Like said.
He stressed that it is now a great challenge for people to be informed and to be assured of adherence to quarantine, and, if necessary, to assist the police.
The infection is currently affecting the weakest sections of society. A few days ago, in Getingen, in a building with a high percentage of Roma residents, there was a sudden outbreak of coronavirus infection.
