The association HANGO ROMA and the Roma Adult Education Center Burgenland had planned an event for International Roma Day in spring 2020, which will be celebrated worldwide on April 8th. The event, which was canceled due to the Covid19 measures, will now take place on September 26, 2020 in the OffenenHausOberwart (OHO).
The Oberwart assassination had significant consequences for the autochthonous Roma society in Burgenland and Austria. For the first time in the history of the Second Republic, the ethnic group received socially relevant attention. The sometimes precarious living conditions came into the focus of the public as well as the structural discrimination and the prejudice structures with which the Roma were still confronted.
While the Oberwart assassination resulted in more or less noticeable changes, attacks on Roma and murders in other European countries remained largely without consequences for societies. State measures to improve the living conditions of the Roma are lacking in most countries, as is rigorous action against right-wing extremist groups and media who use racist slogans to prepare the ground for everyday violence against Roma.
