Serbia: Columnist Marko Vidojkovic accused of hate speech against Roma, he claims - I am not a racist

Writer and columnist Marko Vidojković is accused of hate speech against Roma because of the column "Paradise in Vuk Vrčević" in the daily Danas.

Vidojkovic says that he is not a racist and that he described the influence that the ten-year rule of the Serbian Progressive Party has on the life of this minority community.

The organization Opra Roma announced that the text of Vidojković, in which he writes about the Roma settlement on Karaburma, is "a symptom of the virus of anti-Roma policy".

The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, also reacted, condemning the inadmissible way in which Roma qualify and saying that she would act on the lawsuit in this case.

The newspaper Danas also came out, whose editorial board announced that the column was published "primarily as an ironic critique of the political abuse of our fellow Roma citizens, written by a writer in his recognizable style."

The Danas editorial board decided to remove Marko Vidojković's column "Paradise in Vuk Vrčević" from the danas.rs portal.
