Thirteen years after a series of racist murders of Roma in Hungary, a shocking and bizarre confession of the main perpetrator was published. However, there is little public interest in that case and it is not clear whether there will be a new process, writes DW.
They killed from an ambush. Cowardly, cold-blooded and cruel. They set their victims' houses on fire and shot them as they fled from the flames. Or they were killed in their sleep. In total, six people were killed, including a child. 55 others were injured, mostly seriously. For one reason: they were Roma.
The series of murders in 2008 and 2009 is the worst racist crime in recent Hungarian history. It is a series of right-wing terrorist attacks - similar to the series of so-called murders. of the "National Socialist Underground" (NSU) in Germany. The murders of Roma were committed at the end of the socialist-liberal government's mandate, at a time when Hungary was mired in corruption and political turmoil. A few months later, Viktor Orbán came to power with a two-thirds majority.
