Vibke Judit from the Pro Asylum organization told us that almost every minute a call arrives from Russia. "People are asking how to get out of the country. After the partial mobilization in Russia became known, we noticed it extremely both on social media and in relation to our teams of advisers", says Judit in a conversation with DW.
The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), which is part of the German Ministry of the Interior, is responsible for asylum applications in Germany. At the request of DW, they answered that in the current year almost no increased number of requests for asylum from Russian citizens was registered, compared to the previous year. So far, there have been about 1,800 requests for asylum, while in 2021 about 2,300. The war against Ukraine that started in February did not contribute to increasing the number of asylum seekers either.
Maximilian Kahl, a spokesman for Germany's interior ministry, said the BAMF's decision-making practice regarding asylum seekers from Russia had changed since April and that "as a rule, refusal to serve military service is a reason for protection." In addition, following the Russian attack on Ukraine in February, 438 Russian citizens were admitted on humanitarian grounds. This includes members of the opposition or journalists.
