A Russian couple who condemned their country's invasion of Ukraine have received refugees at their hotel in Serbia, an EU aspirant but a traditional Russian ally who is hesitant to condemn the Kremlin for an unprovoked attack on Ukraine.
But for dozens of Ukrainians, the hotel in central Serbia, run by Mikhail Goluptsov and his wife Vera, is welcome.
"When someone is in trouble, they should be helped first, no matter what religion or ethnicity they are, no matter who they are or where they come from," Goluptsov told RFE / RL.
Since 2019, he and his wife have been running a hotel in Prnjavor, a small town in central Serbia.
"Guided by these principles, I left Russia in 2014 when it annexed Crimea because I did not want my family to live in a country taking part of its neighbors' territory," Goluptsov said, adding that Ukrainian refugees were welcome to stay at his hotel. as long as they need, with free food and accommodation. According to the Commissariat for Refugees, about 13,000 arrived in Serbia as of March 23, and about 3,000 found accommodation with relatives or friends. There are currently 48 refugees from Ukraine in reception centers in Obrenovac, near Belgrade and Vranje, in southern Serbia.
