"It is still a specter in Macedonia for a woman to pick up a trumpet and play," says 44-year-old Tehamana Lazar from Kumanovo, the only trumpet player in Macedonia. She works in two places, teaching Roma language at the school "Brothers Ramiz and Hamid" in S. Orizari and as a music teacher at the school "Roma Rock School". There he teaches vocals, solfege and trumpet, and they don't only study Romani music, but also other musical genres.
Lazar says that her father is a trumpeter and that she became interested in that instrument from a young age, and like every child, she says, she wanted to try to learn to play.
"When I was trying to learn to play, a tone came out, which is very strange for a girl. When I enrolled in junior music school, everyone asked me what do you want to play, and I answered trumpet. Every instrument has its own difficulties, I can't say that I didn't have problems. It takes a lot of practice and dedicating yourself to the instrument as much as possible. I was very happy when I heard that two girls from 'Brothers Ramiz and Hamid' wanted to play the trumpet. They started improvising with the horn, but they are small, beginners. We will see if they will come to classes," says Lazar.
