Zoran Zaev in Suto Orizari: "A minister without portfolio will be abolished, but there will be directorates"

We will build an even more original and transparent government that will work for the people, to promote the rights of all citizens, said yesterday President Zoran Zaev at a forum held in the municipality of Suto Orizari.

"We will abolish all seven ministers without portfolio, who gave results but did not have their own capacity due to infrastructure, as ministries without portfolio, but we will create agencies, directorates to work even more," said Zaev.

This means that one of the ministries without portfolio, which also belonged to the Roma, will be abolished, but an agency, directorate with the same or similar competencies will be established, which are closely related to the Roma issues.

Six Roma creatives talk art, identity, and the fight for equality in Romania

Romania’s one million Roma people have a long, yet little-known history of oppression. For five centuries, they were enslaved by Romanian noblemen and the Church.

During the Second World War, 25,000 Romanian Roma people were deported to Transnistria, for being “dangerous to public order”. Historians estimate that altogether, between 220,000 and 500,000 Romani were killed by the Nazis and their collaborators during the Second World War — between 25 per cent and 50 per cent of Europe’s Roma population at the time — in either concentration camps or summary executions.

More died during the deportations due to cold, hunger and disease. However, few Romanians — or, indeed, Roma people — are aware of these atrocities, as they are not taught in schools, or widely spoken about in the media.

Europe's Roma people 'left behind' during coronavirus pandemic

Roma people are Europe’s largest ethnic minority but many of them are subjected to discrimination and social exclusion.

There are 12 million in Europe and around half that within the European Union.

Campaigners claim the continent's Roma communities have been "left behind" during the coronavirus pandemic.

Now they are calling for specific targets and measures in the EU's next seven-year budget to help address the problem.

"We do not want to see anymore Roma not having access to water, to basic services, food, medicines because we actually saw during the pandemic that Roma were those actually left behind," said Jamen Gabriela Hrabanova, director of the European Roma Grassroots Organisations Network.

The last Roma Integration Report from the European Commission painted a stark picture of the problem.

Catalonia's Roma: Fighting stereotypes 600 years after migration

Spain's Roma are famous for flamenco, but Catalonia has its own community and it's determined to save cultural heritage.

Catalan rumba is a creation of Barcelona. Other Gypsies in other cities don't know how to play it and they'd admit it. We write about joy, about parties and love, and we chronicle the life of the neighbourhood.

We want to recover the Roma language because the new generations don't know it. European Gypsies speak Romani and when we meet them, we don't know it. We want to recover it and also the culture with it.

The language was forbidden for centuries in Spain and has disappeared entirely in Catalonia.

"We want to recover the Roma language because the new generations don't know it. European Gypsies speak Romani and when we meet them, we don't know it. We want to recover it and also the culture with it.

"Understanding history can stop the ignorance that makes us believe the stereotypes we see on television. If we know our history, we can be confident of who we are. If we are confident we can thrive."
