Roksana: Campaigner – Against deportations

Roksana Hajrizi, born in Kosovo yet having lived 23 of her 26 years in Canada, is leading a campaign for the thousands like herself who due to harsh anti-migrant laws face the imminent danger of deportation.

Her father has already been sent back to Kosovo and is reported to have gone into hiding. Fears among Roma have risen since the recent murder of Gani Rama in the streets of Pristina.
Meanwhile, Roksana is meeting officials in Toronto on Thursday [24 Oct] to discuss the re-opening of her case.

She says it is largely negligence and legal bungling that have brought herself, her sister Camila and their mother Celina, into

the perilous situation in which they now find themselves; stateless, unable legally to work and likely to have the family further broken up.

"I believe I got this interview due mostly through the pressure of my campaign," says Roksana. "We are getting the fight against deportation known across Canada and in Europe too. We ask all to join in".

Roma in Germany: How to get out of the role of victim?

Prejudice, assaults, harassment, constant threats of expulsion from the country - many young Roma and Sinti people in Germany live under intense psychological pressure. Dealing with it is not easy.

"Many young people hide their identities because of the discrimination they have been exposed to," says Merdjan Jakupov, executive director of the Roma youth organization Amaro Drom (Our Way) from Berlin.

The image that most of society has about Roma is not simply to change. Many people's prejudices are deeply ingrained, and some media outlets even encourage it - consciously or unconsciously. "When something negative happens, everybody comes to report it.

Instead, fear and frustration arose. The uncertain future is a problem facing the Amaro Drom youth organization itself. The project has so far been funded by funds under the German government's Living Democracy program.

But to the surprise of the people of the association, their funds have been cut. So they had to cancel three permanent jobs. And one of the consequences is that such conferences will not be possible in the future, at least not in this form.

Banja Luka drama epilogue: Old woman and her daughter left homeless based on untitled document

The Popovic family, the elderly Vukosawa, and her daughter Sanja were evicted from a family house where they lived for 50 years on unsolicited documentation.

The family now has an eight-day appeal period to decide on the Banja Luka District Court.

The family lawyer says that in his 24-year law career he does not remember such a case.

"The family was literally evicted from their home where they lived for over 50 years for an alleged debt of about 3500 euros, and the dog is worth around 100,000 euros," the lawyer said.

- Janko Trivic did not sue for a fictional debt of 3500 euros. It came with a document with no verification that had no stamp! - said Sanja Popovic.

Czech President Havel protested against the wall separating non-Roma from Roma on Matiční Street 20 years ago

Twenty years ago, on 13 October 1999, a concrete wall was installed on Matiční Street in the city of Ústí nad Labem. The barrier became an infamous example of problematic coexistence between neighbors in the Czech Republic.

The wall was meant to separate an area of single-family homes that were privately owned by non-Romani people from municipally-owned apartment buildings that were predominantly occupied by Romani people. Under pressure from the Czech Government, and after protests by human rights defenders both abroad and domestically, the barrier was disassembled six weeks later.

The Romani tenants had moved into the municipally-owned units on Matiční Street after moving away from other housing estates in the area in 1994. Their neighbors living in the single-family homes said coexistence with the newcomers was problematic and wrote up a petition demanding the building of a wall so they would not have to hear or see what they complained of as disorder and noise around the municipally-owned buildings.
