The Romani road: Australia's Roma culture

Turned away at caravan parks, treated as shirkers or swindlers, even as a fairytale. Stereotypes have followed Australia's Romani “Gypsies” since the First Fleet. But step inside their culture, music and travel stories. You might even be inspired to hit the road.

We spin like dust devils, hands high in the air. As the guitars throb and trumpets soar, I'm dancing near the stage with two women from Serbia. Chorus after chorus, the crowd cheers the music on.

Lead singer Sarah Bedak wails into the microphone, backed by seven musicians, including husband Nenad. Dressed in bright pink shorts and stockings, her limbs coil and undulate to the music. A violin begins to howl. Sweat rolls down our faces, our arms, but we three women cannot stop dancing, cannot stop swivelling our hips to the accelerating beat. It's the first time I've heard a Gypsy band live and I'm so enthralled I feel as if I could fly.

When the song ends on a long, high note, the crowd applauds loudly and cries out in what sounds like Hungarian. Before beginning the next tune, Sarah and Nenad deliver patter about the history and culture of the Romani people – a history so secret, so hidden, that few readers would know that the first of them arrived in Australia as convicts on the First Fleet, and that they have been living in our country ever since.

Today, roughly 25,000 call Australia home. Political correctness has not yet defeated the term Gypsy, but most identify as Romani or Roma. An individual is a Rom.

Suto Orizari Health Center Board - "Lost in Translation"

It is not necessary to comment, but what "stings" and the reaction on social networks was the reason for a "debate" between the Roma.

Whose idea was it, the signboard with the inscription of the Health Center in Suto Orizari in addition to the Macedonian and Albanian language, which is normal to be made in Romani, as a municipality with a majority Roma population.

The intention is ok, but who is the translator of Romani who "helped" the Roman inscription instead of being infarcted to be received with ridicule and јоке by the Roma themselves.

Who is the one who made the decision to have exactly that inscription in Romani and after 24 hours to "correct" it in a lesser evil?

The first variant is totally "lost in translation." Although the second is not something, God knows, but it is "more sustainable" even though it does not correspond completely.

The message is as follows, another time "open your eyes", and consult more sides, and not overnight and on a "knock".

Everything is ready for the start of the 11th Congress of the IRU, for the first time in history by electronic voting

To mark the 50th anniversary of the First World Congress of Roma in London in 1971, and then to be formulated as the International Roma Union IRU, ten IRU Congresses, have been held continuously so far, on June 27, 2020 through a Video Conference the 11th Congress of the IRU is organized.

For the first time in its rich history, the IRU as the oldest and largest international Roma organization in this Congress will promote the way the new IRU leadership votes for the next four-year term, through a broader democratic process, and a larger mandate of the IRU's new leadership by promoting ET team.

This means that delegates, members and Roma organizations will be included in the voting for the future positions of the IRU with their vote for the assignment of the mandate through the new WEB platform of the ET team through electronic voting.

This is done thanks to the engagement of Anton Soft IT company for information technology, Web and design and its owner Elvis Hajdar.

This is further evidence that the new IRU leadership is moving forward with the spread of democracy and the equal participation of all relevant factors in creating plans and actions related to Roma issues.

For the first time, the IRU, in addition to opening wide doors for the admission of new IRU members and delegates, also develops its network even deeper on all continents, and also strengthens the IRU women's lobby in its activities by participating in all positions with 50 % of a Roma woman.

According to current information, the new leadership and members of the IRU will be a combination of experienced and long-time Roma activists, accompanied by young intellectual and programmatic fresh Roma blood, as well as equal participation of Roma women.

That's why the motto of this 11th IRU Congress is simple - WE ARE ALL IRU!
