Norwegian news server Aftenposten reports that Erik Lunde, a city councilor in Oslo who is a member of the Christian People's Party (KrF), recently gave a speech about the idea of creating a memorial to Romani victims of the Holocaust in Norway.

His fellow councilors, including Mayor Marianne Borgen, unanimously agreed to submit a proposal to the Government for the creation of such a memorial.

Lunde has been a member of the council since 2011. His speech was considered very important and was well-received.

The mayor told him: "I want to thank you for emphasizing human dignity, in many cases." His fellow city councilors also called him a very good politician who defends the interests of the people and emphasizes making politics more accessible to them in support of the right interests.

The speech on 5 September was about the idea of building a memorial to the Romani victims of the Holocaust. More than 100 Norwegian Roma were murdered during the Second World War.

Czech Police recommend prosecuting woman who wore Nazi swastikas for supporting a movement to suppress human rights

Detectives in Prague have recommended prosecuting a 47-year-old woman who attended a demonstration by the "Freedom and Direct Democracy" (SPD) movement in April on Wenceslas Square because she did so wearing a chain with many Nazi swastikas and other symbols of Nazi Germany.

Czech Television received the news from Jan Daněk, spokesperson for the police in the Czech capital.

The woman, police believe, committed the crime of showing sympathy for a movement to suppress human rights and freedoms by wearing the symbols; if convicted, she faces up to three years in prison.

"Detectives from the Prague 1 police precinct completed their investigation of the case of the 47-year-old woman and filed a motion with the Prague 1 prosecutor's office to prosecute her for felony display of sympathy for movements aiming to suppress human rights and freedoms," Daněk said.

The SPD convened the demonstration against what they called the "dictatorship of the European Union" on the afternoon of 25 April to launch their campaign for the European Parliament. CCTV cameras not only captured the woman wearing the chain with the Nazi German swastikas, but another demonstrator giving the Nazi salute.

The man who did so, 34-year-old Radek Mansfeld, has been give a six-month suspended sentence and was fined CZK 30 000 - 1.200 euro. The verdict has yet to take effect because he appealed.

Roma integration in Lithuania

For the 2014-2020 period, Lithuania will be allocated a total of €6.8 billion in EU funds, out of which €4.7 billion will come from the European Social Fund (ESF) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Of this amount, at least 24.2% will be spent on the ESF, with at least 20% of that going towards the promotion of social inclusion and combating poverty. The latter amount could also finance Roma-related measures.

The Council of Europe estimates that there are approximately 3,000 Roma livingin Lithuania (0.08% of the population).

Lithuania’s strategy also aims at increasing public tolerance through intercultural dialogue.
Lithuania’s ational Roma integration strategy (action plan) is aimed at promoting the participation of the Roma in public life, reducing social exclusion, enhancing self-awareness in the Roma community as well as increasing tolerance towards the Roma.

Romani people in fiction

Many fictional depictions of the Romani in literature and art present Romanticized narratives of their supposed mystical powers of fortune telling, and their supposed irascible or passionate temper paired with an indomitable love of freedom and a habit of criminality.

Critics of how Romani people have been portrayed in popular culture point out similarities to portrayals of Jewish people, with both groups stereotyped negatively as wandering, spreading disease, abducting children, and violating and murdering others.

Romani people were portrayed in Victorian and modern British literature as having "sinister occult and criminal tendencies"and as associated with "thievery and cunning", and in English Renaissance and baroque theatre as incorporating "elements of outlandish charm and elements which depict [them] as the lowest of social outcasts," connected with "magic and charms," and "juggling and cozening."

In opera, literature and music, throughout Europe, Romani women have been portrayed as provocative, sexually available, gaudy, exotic and mysterious.

Hollywood and European movies, as well as popular music and other forms of pop culture, have promoted similar stereotypes
