Roma in North Macedonia have a hard time paying their bills

The percentage of Roma whose salaries and other incomes decreased during the covid-19 pandemic in North Macedonia is 59, in contrast to the regional average, which is around 50 percent. There was an increase in income, on the other hand, for only one percent

Every second Roma in the Western Balkans has had their income reduced during the covid-19 pandemic, and the majority (64 percent) fear that they will lose their jobs in the next 12 months.

On the other hand, online teaching is more difficult for every second Roma child compared to teaching with physical presence, and even three out of four Roma children did not receive help during online lectures, both from their teachers and classmates.

These are part of the results of the research presented today at the regional conference on the socioeconomic impact of covid-19 on Roma from the Western Balkans, organized by the Roma Integration Project of the Council for Regional Cooperation (SRS).

Education and employment are the two areas where the pandemic has most affected this population.

Slovakia: Lunik IX - The Last European Ghetto

Lunik iX, the city district in the western part of the city of Košice was created in 1979 after the then part of the city where the Roma lived was destroyed, and since then the number of inhabitants has increased three times.

That sad suburb is today called "the last European ghetto" or "the shame of the nation". Eyewitnesses write that a combination of smells of freshly washed clothes and the stench of sewage floats between the dilapidated buildings. Bed linen hangs sadly from the balconies of buildings that have not been renovated since the 1970s.

From dilapidated buildings, without water in the taps, cables hang with which the tenants illegally connect to the electricity of the street lighting.

Lunik, originally settled next to a landfill, is today considered one of the largest Roma communities in Slovakia.

Health standards in the settlement are at the lowest possible level, and diseases such as hepatitis, diarrhea, scabies and meningitis are common, while unemployment has reached a rate of over 90 percent.

A heart-breaking story from Nis: Little Zejna (10) is made to sit on the school desk every day by her father

Little Zejna Asanović is a fourth-grade student at "Radoje Domanović" Elementary School in Niš. She differs from her peers in that she suffers from atrophy of the lower limbs. Zejna is not able to move and until two years ago she didn't even have a wheelchair. Her brave father carried little Zeina to school in his arms. He would bring it, leave it on the bench, and then come and get it.

He could never play with his friends, go out for a snack. After the school bell, when the children were happily running around the schoolyard, Zeyna was still sitting alone.

When the problem was recognized, she got a personal assistant, who she says is now her best friend.

Since then, Zejna has already been going on a long vacation, and she got used to the stroller that was a donation from the Federation of Roma elementary, high school and university students - FROS.

Nis, Serbia: No more Roma councilors, but Roma problems still unresolved

A large number of members of this community mostly live in Roma neighborhoods, five of which are in Nis: Belgrade neighborhood, Stochni trg, Yevrejsko gravelje, Crvena zvezda, Bulevar 12. Februari.

The Roma community in Nis faces many problems:

-employment (about 90% of the Roma population is unemployed),

-housing (no Roma settlement has a detailed regulation plan),

- education (segregated elementary schools, preschool education of Roma children, statistics showed that out of the total number of children in preschool institutions, Roma make up only five to seven percent),

- Social problems,

- health care…

The question arises - what do the councilors from the Roma community who are in the city and municipal parliaments do to solve these problems? Through an interview with some of them, we can conclude that in fact they do almost nothing, because as they say, some of them are on the lists of the ruling party on their own merit, and not as members of the Roma community. Is there perhaps an answer to the question why nothing changes in terms of solving the problems of the Roma community? Why only the non-governmental sector initiates the adoption of LAP, the development of detailed regulation plans in Roma settlements, as well as many other important issues. Therefore, a greater number of representatives of the Roma community in local parliaments have never brought changes or improvements in this community.
