Thousands of Roma marched through Athens and Thessaloniki to protest the teenager's death

Thousands of protesters from Greece's Roma community marched through Athens and Thessaloniki tonight, with community leaders appealing for calm following the death of teenager Kostas Fragoulis, the 16-year-old Roma boy who was shot in the head last week during a police chase over an alleged unpaid tax bill. gas.

About 2,500 people demonstrated in Thessaloniki, where the teenager lived and died, and a similar protest march was held in Athens after student and anarchist groups called for protests following his death.

Greek media reported that protesters burned tires and blocked streets during protests in several parts of the country, the media reported.

Authorities did not release the teenager's name, but relatives identified him as Kostas Fragulis, who was married with a young child.

- Everyone is crying here. It is unfair for a child to leave like this, said the secretary of the Roma community, Andonis Tasios, where the teenager lived.

Frangulis was hospitalized in intensive care after emergency surgery following the shooting, and the funeral is scheduled for Thursday.

Police in Thessaloniki said around 50 people emerged from the university campus this afternoon and threw several Molotov cocktails at a police anti-demonstration unit stationed nearby. There are no reports of injuries.

The teenager was shot in the head by a police officer on a motorcycle during a chase after the young man filled up his truck at a gas station and allegedly fled without paying the €20 bill.

The accused officer said during his first court appearance last week that he fired his weapon to stop the truck because he feared for the lives of his colleagues, but that he aimed at the tires, not the driver.

The police officer has been suspended and since Friday is suspected of the crime of attempted murder with possible intent and illegal use of weapons.

With the teenager's death, it is now much more likely that the felony charge will be changed to manslaughter, according to US media.

In the meantime, the International Roma Union - IRU and its president Zoran Dimov sent a letter with a reaction to the Embassy of Greece in Skopje, where after a week they replied from the Embassy that they will also send their official announcement these days.

A 16-year-old Roma died, shot by the police during a police chase in Thessaloniki, IRU sent a reaction to the Greek authorities, there is still no response

After an eight-day battle for life, the 16-year-old Roma who was shot by a policeman during a police chase in Thessaloniki has died.

The hospital where he was hospitalized in critical condition announced yesterday that the boy died despite the efforts of the doctors.

In a comatose state, with a wound in the head area from a firearm, the boy was admitted to the Thessaloniki hospital on December 5 at two in the morning, he was immediately operated on and transferred to intensive care, where he was treated in the past days, but succumbed to of the injuries.

Last Monday, the 16-year-old stopped at a gas station, filled up gas for 20 euros, ran away without paying and the police were immediately informed, after which police officers on motorbikes chased the vehicle driven by the boy, who, after not responding to requests and orders to stop, according to the media, was shot in the head by one of the policemen.

The policeman who shot the boy was brought before an investigative judge in Thessaloniki on Friday and according to Greek media, he said he acted in self-defense because of the danger his colleagues were in when the minor driver tried to hit them with his car, and regarding the shots indicated that he aimed low at the tires and not at the driver.

The policeman is under house arrest, and further it will be decided whether he will be transferred to one of the Greek prisons.

Greece's Minister of Civil Protection responsible for the police, Takis Theodorikakos, expressed "deep regret for the death of the 16-year-old boy and condolences to the family" via Twitter.

- I repeat that the case is being investigated by justice, which is solely competent to evaluate the facts and judge the responsibilities. Let us all respect that, wrote Theodorikakos.

Last week, because of the case, in several Roma settlements, both in Athens and in Thessaloniki, the Roma caused serious incidents. By the way, the IRU and its president Mr. Zoran Dimov, sent a reaction to the official Greek authorities (specifically to the Embassy of the Republic of Greece in Skopje) about this event a week ago, but unfortunately there is still no response from the Greek side about this case.

If the food and the fuel runs out, winter could see another wave of Romani refugees from Ukraine

Before the Russian Federation began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Oksana Lokotosh had a satisfactory life in a two-storey house in Donbas with one of her daughters and her six grandchildren. The women grew fruits and vegetables and raised hens and pigs in a spacious garden.

The family sold whatever they did not consume themselves. When the Army of the Russian Federation chose their home as a target, their lives were turned upside down.

“Fortunately, I was in the hospital at the time and my daughter and her children were shopping. When they returned home, the house had been bombed,” says the 64-year-old Lokotosh.

“We took just the most essential things and left,” she recalls. Their travels brought them to Prague, then to a collection camp in South Bohemia, and ultimately to a residential hotel in the Karlovy Vary Region in the town of Luby, which is run by the Khamoro Chodov nonprofit organization.
