Why will the Roma in Hungary not have a representative in parliament?

In fact, one million Roma live in Hungary and many face serious problems, but instead of helping, many Roma politicians are embroiled in conflict and corruption. Orban's authorities are encouraging him, writes DV.

Delegates loudly interrupted the speaker, jumped, stopped just before the start of the beating - this happened on January 31, 2022, at the meeting of the National Self-Government of the Hungarian Roma (ORO). The meeting was a last resort to elect a candidate to represent the Roma in parliament, to which every recognized minority in Hungary is entitled.

When the session ended at 23:59, it was clear: the legal deadline had expired and the official interest group of Hungarian Roma would not send a representative to parliament in the next legislative term.

This is the last event in the conflict that has long divided the association. On the one hand, there is the Roma non-governmental youth association Firos, and on the other, the Lungo Drom (Long Debt) organization, which has supported Fidesz for years, the right-wing ruling party of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The two organizations wanted to push their candidate - in the end, neither is there.

Justice for expelled Roma from Kosovo

The Kosovo Roma Rights Coalition (KRRC) is a broad coalition of organisations of Roma refugees in many European countries. The KRRC has commissioned two American human rights lawyers to begin negotiations with the Kosovo government. The government has been asked to provide a date for the talks in Brussels by mid-April. Background to the negotiations: Thousands of Roma homes had been set on fire and looted and people displaced in the ethnic cleansing that followed the Kosovo war.

According to exile groups, 90 per cent of the Roma were driven out of Kosovo at gunpoint in 1999. The ethnic cleansing of the Roma included torture, rape, murder and mass looting and destruction, which international troops stationed there stood idly by. By March 2000, some 15,000 Roma homes had been destroyed. After the expulsion of 150,000 Roma from Kosovo, the remaining houses and properties were occupied by the majority population.

Today, the expelled Roma and their children live scattered throughout Europe and continue to face difficulties. Some are still threatened with deportation. Attempts to seek justice in the past have failed. With a new Kosovo government seeking to join the European Union and several former Kosovo Albanian politicians facing trial in The Hague, a settlement of Roma claims is increasingly likely, the KRRC said.

International Mother Language Day

The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh. It was approved at the 1999 UNESCO General Conference and has been observed throughout the world since 2000.

UNESCO believes in the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies. It is within its mandate for peace that it works to preserve the differences in cultures and languages that foster tolerance and respect for others.

It is in this context that the preservation of the mother tongue, TV BTR Nacional made a TV series of 202 episodes "Speak Romani" and 31 series of "Romani Alphabet", precisely to nurture its native Romani language.

Serbia: Three members of the Roma community on the SNS electoral list for "Aleksandar Vucic" - We can be together

Unlike the previous parliamentary elections, when the ruling Serbian Progressive Party "Aleksandar Vucic - for our children" had two Roma candidates for deputies, now there are three.

In the parliamentary benches of the SNS, during the dissolution, candidates for deputies are the romologist Dragoljub Ackovic from Belgrade and the specialized professional educator Sandra Jokovic from Kraljevo.

For the first time since voting for deputies, one Roma woman was highly ranked on the parliamentary electoral list, and this time it is the opera artist Natasa Tasic Knezevic, who is in the high 16th place on the list of candidates for deputies of the Serbian Progressive Party. The party "Aleksandar Vuči - We can be together"

In 105th place is the well-known long-time activist Romolog Dragoljub Ackovic from Belgrade.
