The data show that in a total of 142 monitored institutions nationwide, only four Roma women are employed in managerial positions. While the employment of Roma women is 0.47 percent, said the Advocacy Group for Equal Employment Opportunities, composed of Roma activists working within HERA - Association for Health Education and Research, during the presentation of the findings of the Report on the situation of Roma women in the labor market.
- From the analysis of a total of 54 LSGUs, really devastating information was obtained, about low employment and general non-representation of Roma in managerial positions, and we single out the municipality of Suto Orizari, which is considered the largest municipality with Roma population, and the local government Employed a total of 18 people, of which only 8 are Roma, and none of the above is in a managerial position, said Sibela Mamudoska from the Advocacy Group for Equal Employment Opportunities.
- Out of the monitored total of 30 employment centers, only in the centers in Gostivar and Negotino one Roma is employed. Alarming gender inequality has been identified in most of the monitored institutions, even in some institutions there are no Roma employees at all, such as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Local Self-Government and the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, indicating a serious lack of adequate policies to eliminate this inequality, I would say discrimination, says Mamudoska.
The findings of the Report on the Situation of Roma Women in the Labor Market were presented at a conference organized within the project "Roma Women Advocate for Equal Employment Opportunities", which is financially supported by the Swedish foundation "Kvinna Till Kvinna".

Belgrade: They rescued the children from the burning barracks near the Pacevacki bridge

A fire broke out in the Roma settlement near the Pancevac Bridge in Belgrade two days ago, which in a short time literally swallowed three barracks and thanks only to chance and luck in that fire there were no casualties. There were even six children in one of the facilities, from which a six-month-old baby and a six-year-old girl were pulled out at the last minute.
The fire took place on Vuk Vrcevic Street in Palilula. According to media reports, the cause of the fire was probably a faulty installation in one of the barracks, which then spread to two adjacent barracks. The resident of one of the barracks, Vaska Selimi (30), said that 12 people, six of whom were children, lived in the barrack where the fire broke out. "Everything burned me and I have nothing more," said Vaska. The further spread of the fire was prevented by the rapid intervention of the fire brigade.

Two realities: Roma in the EU and Roma in the Western Balkans in the eyes of the EC

The European Commission (EC) recently presented communications on two important policies which are both of relevance for the countries of the Western Balkans: the 2020 Enlargement Package and the new EU Roma Strategic Framework for Equality, Inclusion and Participation.
Although the manifestations of antigypsyism may differ from country to country, it exists all over Europe, including in the countries of the Western Balkans. With the exception of the report on Serbia, the progress reports acknowledge the fact that discrimination against Roma exists in general, but deny discrimination in employment and education (Albania, Montenegro), in education (Bosnia and Herzegovina), or employment (North Macedonia). The existence of discrimination is mostly acknowledged indirectly, and none of the reports call upon the governments to fight the discrimination against Roma. Currently, the NEET rate among Roma in the EU is 62%, while it amounts to 10,1% among the general population. According to UNDP research, the NEET rate among Roma in the Western Balkans is between 73% (Serbia) and 86% (Bosnia and Herzegovina); the rate among Romani women goes as high as 81% (North Macedonia) and 93% (Montenegro). The reports of the European Commission, however, hardly pay attention to this issue. The majority of Roma are caught in precarious self-employment, with no social security and small, unstable incomes. The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the dangers of this situation, as many Roma remain without any income, having to rely on cash or in-kind assistance from the authorities, international donors or civil society organisations. The high NEET rates indicate that the majority of the next generation of Roma will also remain in these precarious jobs if politicians fail to act soon.
