Martin Kaleja - From a Roma settlement in Slovakia to the Czech academic world

Assoc. Martin Kaleja has gradually gained his professional experience as an educator and researcher at Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic), University of ваstava (Czech Republic), Comenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia), and Hellenic University in Opava (Czech Republic). Faculty of Public Policy and Associate Professor at the Center for Empirical Research.

He is also a member of the Board of the Czech Government on Roma Issues, chairing the Education Committee.

Otherwise, he spent his childhood and his teenage years in a Roma neighborhood near Presov in the east of Slovakia and still had a desire to be a teacher.

During his education and career, Kaleja faced prejudice in elementary school.

Kaleja believes that a growing number of Roma are completing higher education in this part of the world and that it is not a dramatic jump from day to day, but rather an intense process.

Looking at life today and his perspective is: “And after all today when a skinhead gets into a tram and looks for a certain person, he will find it. It can hardly be explained to such a person that I am an associate professor who teaches at a school. "

Slovak Plenipotentiary for Romani Communities: We will focus on education and employment

The Government of the Slovak Republic took note on 25 June 2019 of the "Monitoring Report on the Fulfillment of the Strategy of the Slovak Republic for Romani Integration to 2020", which monitors the fulfillment of the activities and measures outlined in the Action Plans for the Strategy in the areas of education, employment, financial inclusion, health, housing, non-discrimination and Romani community approaches toward the majority society during 2018, and which was undertaken by the Office of the Slovak Government Plenipotentiary for Romani Communities in association with the ministries and submitted to the Government by the Interior Minister. Of 154 activities and measures designed to be fulfilled during 2018, the Office of the Plenipotentiary assessed 85 as "fulfilled", or "about to be fulfilled", 54 as "underway" and 15 as "unfulfilled".

Almost EUR 120 million was spent last year on Romani integration in Slovakia. The investment was especially about activities to increase Romani employability and employment (EUR 75 million), educational activities (EUR 30 million) and the area of housing (EUR 7 million).

Additional editions of the vocabulary and grammar of the Romani language

The Government through the General Secretariat will open a call for printing additional issues of grammar in Romani language and a dictionary in Macedonian - Romani.

- According to the Strategy for Roma 2014-2020 one of the postulates of this document, as well as one of the priority goals of the same is the development and promotion of the Roma culture, language and tradition. The printing of these two publications will directly contribute to the realization of this goal - say the government press service.

The decision taken at today's government session envisions the dictionary in Macedonian - Roma language of 800 pages to be printed in 500 copies, while the grammar of the 300-page Romani language - in 1000 copies.

Informative meeting with parents for enrollment in the upcoming school year 2019/2020

Municipality of Shuto Orizari represented by the education adviser Ramiza Sakip in cooperation with the Elementary School ,,Braka Ramiz I Hamid”, presented by the director Alvin Salimovski, the kindergarten “8 April” presented by the Director Sonjul Ahmed and the consultant of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the Department for Roma and Sinti Mustafa Asanovski, organized a meeting with Roma parents in order to inform them about the enrollment in the forthcoming school year 2019/2020 as well as the necessary documents and the deadline for school enrollment.

During the informal celebration, the importance of primary education, pre-school education, as well as the benefit of this important process in the future was emphasized.

Roma parents were encouraged to enroll their children within the legal deadline, from May 1 to May 31.
The date is the same in other primary schools as in the territory of the city of Skopje and throughout the republic
