Urgent needs for Roma in post disaster period in Turkey

A powerful earthquake has struck South-eastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, killing more than 20.000 people as they slept and trapping many others. The government declared a 4th-level alarm, meaning it is asking for international help.
Hatay, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Şanlıurfa, and Adana are the most damaged cities. Roma communities are one of the most vulnerable groups in the region. Some of the houses collapsed and most of them were damaged. Rain, snow, and cold brought by seasonal conditions make the situation even more difficult. Some neighbourhoods cannot be reached. People are anxious about aftershocks of earthquakes. Roma are working informal jobs, therefore; their insecurities have increased in this period. The vital needs for Roma are food, shelter, and heating. At night, the heat will decrease -4 and -7 Centigrade degrees and living conditions become so much worse. The government and civil society are getting organized; however, Roma do not be prioritized and ERGO Network's member organisation Sıfır Ayrımcılık Derneği - Zero Discrimination is trying to get organized for Roma neighbourhoods. We are listing the emergent needs and current situations of Roma and their families. 

Therefore, we are looking for help and support to reach and support Roma in Eastern Turkey. The urgent needs are:

1. Food and Water, Hot drinks
2. Tents
3. In-tent stove
4. Blanket
5. Winter Clothes (Boots, Coats, Gloves, Hat and Socks)
6. Sleeping bag (for adult and child)
7. Pocket warmer
8. Synthetic underwear (baby/child)
9. Female sanitary pad
10. Powerbank for phones
11. Diapers

Roma are at the top of the discriminated in Croatia - it is difficult for them to get a job and progress in their work

Discrimination in Croatia is still a prominent phenomenon and more and more people feel as if they cannot exercise their human rights, reports the Croatian portal Danas. It is alarming that most do not report it, and even fewer initiate legal proceedings. This is shown by the ombudsman's research, in which the Roma are still at the top of discrimination. Most people associate the Roma community with these scenes. Prejudices are on the rise. Since the majority of Roma do not want to work and live on social assistance, more than 50 percent of Croats have this perception. The Roma are the ones who most often face discrimination in Croatia. 18 percent of respondents think so. In second place are members of the LGBT community with about 16 percent, almost 10 percent of people with disabilities, and in fourth place are women, according to 9 percent of respondents. And mostly in the field of work and employment. The number of those who were discriminated rose to 28 percent, and it is worrying that the majority do not report it and do not initiate legal proceedings.

AP Vojvodina: New discrimination against Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians in Vojvodina

The Government of AP Vojvodina and its President Igor Mirović have awarded contracts worth over 350,000 euros to 9 newspaper publishing companies for the publication and printing of 22 newspapers in 9 minority languages. For almost a decade and more, there has been a complete blockade of any form of support for independent media and Roma intellectuals and activists who have refused to obey any Serbian political party.

The National Council of the Roma National Minority has clearly proven by its behavior that it does not work in the interest of the Roma community, because information is one of the 4 focuses of action of all councils, but it has completely put itself at the service of the Serbian advanced party and their political campaigns Only which is confirmed by the latest decision of Igor Mirović, the Prime Minister of Vojvodina.

The construction of 12 apartments in Bujanovac for Roma displaced from Kosovo begins

The head of the municipal department for urban planning, Basri Memeti, said that the public procurement for the contractor has already been opened and that the plan is to build 12 apartments on Jaqima Gjosica street, where a residential building for displaced persons from Kosovo will be built. was built in 2014. 350 thousand euros have been secured from the funds of the European Union and are ready for the construction of new apartments through the "European Union Support for Social Housing and Active Inclusion" Program.

As Memeti said, ten houses in Bujanovac villages will be bought for the socially endangered. The construction of social housing was vehemently opposed by Alternative for Change councilors at the Assembly session in February 2021, when the location for the building was determined. Then they made accusations that the apartments are to the detriment of the Albanians, that is, that they will change the ethnic structure in Bujanovac, and that among the users there will surely be "one of the rapists of 20,000 women in Kosovo or murderers". Then they left the ruling majority and have been in opposition ever since. These allegations were immediately denied by the leaders of the local authorities, and then by representatives of the OSCE and UNHCR in Serbia.
