This man cherishes the old craft - He sells wicker baskets, when someone has no money, he also sells handicrafts for food

Safet Demirovi (45) is from the village of Lepenica and has been weaving baskets and willow twigs since childhood. He sells it in the villages and towns of southern Serbia, because that is how it exists.
He says that during the summer he picks willow twigs along the river South Morava. One of them peels and dries them.
- I learned this craft from the elders. We Roma from Lepenica are known for knitting baskets and baskets.
I knit the small baskets in about an hour. I need a little more time for a basket - says Safet. I sell small baskets for around 4.5 euros, and baskets for around 12 euros, but sometimes I lower them up to 8 euros. The people buy it poorly, because the villages are already poorly kept goods, so they do not need the basket. Now there is no difference in life in the village and the city. Someone does not have money for a basket, so I often accept food. Otherwise, the baskets are more often taken by the poorer ones, because the rich do not even want to buy them.
He mentions that in the winter he does more work, because in that period there is not much work in the fields as argat.

Czech Finance Minister supports bill to compensate illegally sterilized women

Czech Finance Minister Alena Schillerová (ANO) met last week at the ministry in Prague with non-Romani and Romani women who have been unlawfully sterilized and who have been fighting for compensation for many years. During the meeting, the women shared stories of what was done to them to underscore the importance of the bill to compensate victims of illegal sterilizations that has been in the lower house for almost one year and has yet to undergo a first reading.
News server Romea.cz has been informed that the Finance Minister promised the women she would support the bill to compensate those who have been illegally sterilized. Elena Gorolová, the spokesperson for the group of unlawfully sterilized women, told news server Romea.cz that she welcomed the minister's accommodating approach to adoption of the bill; Gorolová works for the Ostrava-based organization Life Together (Vzájemné soužití).
"The minister listened to us all and also took an interest in why we had not gone to court about what happened to us years ago. [Czech Deputy Public Defender of Rights] Monika Šimůnková explained that the women had been ashamed of what happened to them and didn't want to speak about it publicly," Gorolová told Romea.cz, adding that the five non-Romani and Romani women sterilized without their free and informed choice and consent also met with several lower house lawmakers who listened to what they had to say and expressed support for their compensation.

Bulgaria will have over 1 million Roma in three decades

In 30 years, Bulgaria will count over 1 million Roma. Premature mortality as well as low levels of education will continue to be a problem, according to a study by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.
There is more than double the discrepancy between the number of Roma minority registered by Bulgarian statistics and expert estimates of its real number. According to experts in the field, Roma currently make up about 12 percent of the country's population, while data from the latest census show a share of 4.7 percent.
The reason for the difference is that many Roma continue to declare themselves as Bulgarians or Turks.
This is clear from a study of the demographic and social challenges facing the difficult integration of Roma into Bulgarian society, presented today by the Sofia office of the German political foundation Friedrich Ebert.
The results of the demographic forecast made in the study show that in 30 years the number of Roma in Bulgaria is expected to reach 1 to 1.2 million people. Experts predict that despite a significant decline in the last decade, the number of births of Roma women of reproductive age will remain at least twice as high as the national average. The share of Roma children among the minority will continue to be compared for three decades in many African countries.
Half of the Roma in Bulgaria are illiterate.
