Slovak President Čaputová awards Romani doctor and human rights activist with state honors

Yesterday Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová awarded high state honors in memoriam to Ján Cibuľa, the first Romani community member in the former Czechoslovakia to graduate from Bratislava's Comenius University and its Faculty of Medicine. She awarded high state honors to a total of 20 public figures, including in memoriam to Milada Horáková, a Czech politician murdered by the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, and to Slovaks who contributed to the Velvet Revolution leading to the fall of that same regime in 1989.

Two resistance fighters from the Second World War were also given honors, as were representatives of artistic and social life. The gala awards ceremony was held on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the birth of an independent Slovakia, which the country marks on 1 January.

Cibuľa was given the Order of Ľudovít Štúr First Class in memoriam for his exceptional service in developing society and spreading the good name of the Slovak Republic abroad; the award was received on his behalf by his son, David Cibuľa. A native of Klenovec, he worked as a general practitioner in Bern, Switzerland after successfully graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at Comenius.

In addition to his profession, Cibuľa gave time to fighting for the rights of Romani people and improving their position in civilized society. He was a co-founder of Czechoslovakia's Union of Gypsies-Roma (Svaz Cikánů-Romů) in Slovakia and among the co-organizers of the very first congress of the International Romani Union (IRU), of which he also later became president.

Cibuľa is said to have most valued receiving the Swiss Prize for Culture from the canton of Bern in 1985. He is one of the most eminent Romani figures of the 20th century not just in Europe, but worldwide.

In the year 2001 the Association of Czechoslovak Roma in Canada nominated Cibuľa for the Nobel Peace Prize. Čaputová said in her speech yesterday that Slovakia has exceptional people who have been of extraordinary benefit to their homeland.

Her predecessor, Andrej Kiska, gave state honors last year to 30 figures. Among those receiving the Order of Ľudovít Štúr First Class last year was the former Slovak Government Plenipotentiary for the Roma, Klára Orgovánová, while historian Zuzana Kumanová received the Pribin Cross First Class.

Don't waste money: These are gifts that no one wants

There are holidays ahead of us that we love to shop for and give away, but certain gifts most people don't want to receive for the New Year.

The overwhelming worst gift, in general, are souvenirs and symbols, porcelain figures and ornaments. Then, kitchen utensils and appliances, soap and cosmetics, with the exception of good perfumes, depilators and shaving machines, bathrobes, shower towels…

Of course, you choose the gift according to the person you are giving it to, and if you are close you can always consult to avoid disaster with the choice.

To more than half of the people who received a New Year's gift, it was of no use to them.

A very small percentage of those who think attention is important. Most prefer to get a gift that they know is carefully selected and appropriate to what they want.

Interesting, but hardly anyone wants to be surprised by the gift. There are those who pass on the same gift to someone else, because no criteria is chosen for them and it is more than obvious.

The case of little Monika Karimanovic: Did the state of Serbia react in time?

Serbia and the region are still in limbo with the kidnapping of 12-year-old Monica Karimanovic from the Nis area. The main suspect is Ninoslav Jovanovic of Malcha, better known as the "Malchani Barber", who was released from prison in March this year.

For eight days now that Monica is gone, her parents and close friends still have no hope that she can be returned healthy and alive, but it is clear that there are many inconsistencies in this quest.

The whole case was immediately alerted via social networks by concerned parents and friends. Citizens themselves shared this information immediately. In that chaos the "calmest" were the state institutions and the police of Serbia as the competent institutions. Only after four or five days of disappearance did a more specific search begin, including 200 police and gendarmerie. Nowadays that number stands at 500 people involved, but was it worth the wait?

The same question should be asked of the large number of Roma organizations that have been "quietly" silent until such an "alert" was given by official media in Serbia and the region.

Literally parents and individual Roma activists were left alone in this quest for four-five days!

There were others who targeted this whole case as a case that little Monica might have "fled and got married" after she was a Roma and that the variant was the easiest.

This has proven that when it comes to Roma, the state of Serbia always has some more important priorities than Roma.

In this whole situation, even the President of the state, Aleksandar Vucic, fit into the gray notion that he is well aware of the details but would not want to disclose information.

Don't those Monica parents deserve more consolation from the state and institutions, and keep them in limbo.

Even the media has reconstructed the whole case and it is reported that this happened in just 4 minutes and 43 seconds.

Those fatal minutes were enough for an ordinary pedophile for eight days to hide and all the police not able to locate and discover, how to be the most professional war veteran and know how to hide. The fact is that there are a million shortcomings and inconsistencies. It is a fact that the state of Serbia Roma is not a top priority for them.

God forbid all is best and Monica healthy and lively to return to her loved ones. And then the Pandora's box will open, and where it made a mistake. And the national judicial institutions that released the Novica monster from prison in March and knowing the subject in question were released without any control, surveillance and surveillance with the chance to do it again, raping and assaulting underage children.

Who will bear that responsibility? In other countries, presidents, ministers are resigning, but brother this is Serbia this is the Balkans! It is an impossible mission in these areas!
