Květoslava Podhradská: Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution as seen by an ordinary Romani woman

In the spring of 1989, I moved with my family and my husband at the time from Ostrava to Svitávka - we were rather well-off back then, living in a spacious apartment and, as they say, we "had our own".

That autumn, nursery school obligations began for the children once again.
I accompanied the children to preschool, hurried to my job, went shopping after work, came home, cooked dinner - a cycle that repeated daily. One day, though, everything was different.

On my way home from work I saw a bunch of my neighbors standing outside in front of our building, debating the "unrest in Prague". I asked them what the unrest had been, what it meant.

I didn't understand the first thing about it. Somebody in the crowd said some "hooligans" in Prague had assaulted the public security forces.

People said the "hooligans" had smashed everything up and were brawling with everybody right off the bat. I was startled.
"Hooligans, you say? For God's sake! Why are they letting them do it?" I asked, joining the group.

Helsinki Committee: To respect the concept of 'best interest of the child'

Marking international days is a good opportunity to raise specific topics, mobilize political will and address local, regional and global problems in specific areas.

World Children's Day was first celebrated in 1954 as Universal (International) Children's Day and since then has been celebrated every year on November 20th in order to actualize and promote children's rights and promote their well-being.

The United Nations (UN) adopted the Declaration on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of the Child at its General Assembly on that day in 1959 and 1989.

Parents, teachers, doctors, politicians, civil society, community elders, corporations, the media, and the youth themselves, play an important role in child development and jointly share the duty to advocate, promote and celebrate children's rights through dialogue and action. that will guarantee their protection. As a society, we must guarantee that every child can exercise his or her guaranteed rights.

Professor Dragoljub Ackovic: There are over 1 million Roma in Brazil, and they have come through Spain and Portugal!

The history of the Roma is rich and long. About their origin and migration Roma scholars say that it has been much researched, and the fact is that Roma come from India for which there are many documents. Their exodus began during the attacks of Sultan Mahmud Ghazni about 1,000 years ago (sometime around 1018).

This was noted by the famous professor and historian of Roma history Dragoljub Ackovic.

Otherwise, Ackovic emphasized other periods related to Roma history. It is a historical fact that during the third voyage of the sailor Christopher Columbus in the period 1498-1500 there were four Roma (two men and two women) on board.

In fact, it marked the period when the first Roma to step down on South American soil.

According to Professor Ackovic, there are more than 1 million Roma in Brazil today. The number of Roma in other South American countries and Latin America is also high, but according to Ackovic, the number of Roma in Brazil is impressive.

Interestingly, in 1955, Juscelino Kubitschek was elected President of Brazil, a Czech immigrant by birth and a Roma by mother.
