Kubicek: Xenophobia following migrant crisis exacerbates Roma situation

Andrei Kubiкek completed his postgraduate studies in sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade where he is currently pursuing his doctoral studies.

His research interests included social conflict and sociology of ethnic groups, and his main research topic was racism towards Roma.

Roma, Egyptians and Ashkali are certainly among the most endangered ethnic communities for many reasons. Personally, most of them live in poverty, or unreliable sources of income.

There is no such historical injustice that can be remedied, especially in the case of the Roma where there is a constant and clear continuity between historical and current injustices.

The suffering of the Roma during World War II and the horrors they survived are very poorly documented, having been silenced for decades, often consciously and deliberately. I believe and stand for a better understanding of the history of racism towards Roma and their current situation.

Until that moment is corrected and encompassed by a large number of Roma who, with their influence, will be able to question the current situation, victims of the past will be under-respected, Kubicek said.

The Banjica camp was the largest concentration camp on the territory of occupied Serbia, and large numbers of people were taken to death there.

The infamous Banjica camp where many Roma and Jews lost their lives was formed by order of the German occupier in 1941 and remained in operation until October 3, 1944.

The former barracks of the 18th Infantry Regiment at Banjica were selected for the location.
The first prisoners to be brought were Roma and Jews on May 9, 1941

The exact number of casualties will never be known because most of the documents were destroyed in 1943, and many bodies buried in the camp site and later displaced during the war or destroyed by firing during the charter German and Queensland troops.

The victims of the Banjica camp suffered in a so-called "repentance measure", which was instituted on the order that hundreds of civilians were killed and one fifty German soldiers shot dead by one German soldier.

Consequences of EU Enlargement Blockade to Feel Roma from Western Balkans

Roma are one of the fastest growing ethnic communities in the Western Balkans, who can speak from the start and in three languages! It means its native (Roma), Macedonian as official and also in areas where the majority is of another national community (for example: in the west Tetovo, Gostivar, Debar Kicevo also know Albanian, or in the east and southeast, Delcevo, Vinica, Kocani and Turkish)

The EU's decision to block accession negotiations with RS Macedonia and Albania has also shaken those governments' positions in the fight against discrimination and virtually delayed all plans and strategies.

Unemployment is so high in the Roma community that it is twice as high as in others. This applies to Macedonia. In Albania, one half of Roma live without water in their homes, and one third go to bed hungry every night.

The accession negotiations were a chance for decent pressure on the governments of these two countries, but now they are different.

An example is that the region's working population is shrinking, giving Roma a chance in the future to be more competitive in the labor market in countries such as Macedonia and Albania.

Virtually the Roma in this region seek only a fair chance for equal opportunities.
