Man saves four children from apartment fire in Lipník nad Bečvou, Czech Republic

Jan Sivák (27) saved his relatives from a fire on Hvězdní Street in Lipník nad Bečvou, Czech Republic during the first Sunday of August. The four children were standing at a window and desperately calling for help after their apartment caught fire.

The children were fortunate to be heard by their relative, who lives one street over and did not hesitate to rescue them. When he heard the children crying desperately and calling for help at 2:30 AM, he ran out into the darkened street.

Just one street over, the four children and their mother were fighting for their lives. Sivák wasted no time borrowing a ladder from a neighbor so he could bring the children down one by one from the burning hell that their home had become.

"Four children aged 2, 8, 13 and 15 were standing at a window calling for help, immediate action was necessary. They were unable to get out. I called the fire department immediately. There was no time to wait for them, though, so we leaned a neighbor's ladder against the building and I climbed up it to the second floor. I carried the children one by one out of the burning apartment to safety. It all took about five minutes," Sivák described to news server Romea.cz what he managed to do before firefighters arrived.

"Afterward I heard the emergency services drive up and they removed the children's mother, my aunt, from the burning apartment," Sivák said. She was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and was released the following day.

"The next day I found out that the family had lit a candle in the kitchen and their cat had knocked it over. Fortunately they all managed to move into the living room in time, away from the spreading fire, and called for help," their rescuer described

Serbia: Why do we say "readmission" when we mean "deportation"

The exodus of Roma from Kosovo and from the territory of Yugoslavia in general during the nineties is one of the most massive. A huge wave of people headed for a better life in the direction of Western Europe, selling their modest possessions to make ends meet until they found their way into the white world.

However, their escape from the Milosevic regime into a more normal life did not last long. The only readmission agreement between Serbia and the European Union entered into force on January 1, 2008.

The text of the readmission agreement states that it exists to help people who have moved to European Union countries because of a bad situation in their home country, but the truth is a bit different. The general impression of human rights activists is that in this way the rich countries of Western Europe are somehow cleansing themselves of immigrants, hiding their racism behind the cloak of the word "readmission".

Some also believe that the words "readmission" and "organized deportation" are equally accurate labels when referring to this process.

"That policy is a consequence of the weakening of the so-called "welfare state", as our society has so far perceived the EU. Now we are getting to a situation where the former welfare states are expelling the excess people who cannot be included. in the network for social policy, the deportation of the Roma is happening, and now we see a clearer picture of that policy"

Romanian court hands down a scandalous decision: Roma woman who was beaten up by a minibus driver has to pay a fine

A Roma woman who was beaten by a minibus driver in 2019 in Zalău, Romania, has been fined 1,800 lei [EUR 370]. She also has to pay court costs in the amount of 800 lei [EUR 165] because she has been found guilty of disturbing the peace and public order.

The minibus driver who assaulted her, including with racist rhetoric, has been given a suspended prison sentence. According to the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC), the verdict convicts the Romanian justice system of racism.

"The twisted verdict of the court just compounds the scandal and serves as a damning indictment of a criminal justice system that is racist to its core," Advocacy & Policy Manager Bernard Rorke says of the verdict on the ERRC's website. "This appalling judgement is yet another example of how systemic antigypsyism skews outcomes for Romani victims of racially-motivated violence and denies them justice."
