Northern Macedonia: New price shock, from July 1 more expensive electricity by 7.4% for the three block tariffs

The calculations of the Energy Regulatory Commission are that if the new system of block tariffs was not introduced, the price of electricity would have increased by more than 17 percent.

Electricity on Friday increased by an average of 7.4% for the three block tariffs. For the fourth block in which the largest consumers are, there will be the largest increase in the price of electricity, which will range from 11.4% to almost 100 percent for those who consume enormous electricity. This means that the average price of electricity for 98.8 percent of households will increase by 7.4 percent. "The calculations of the Energy Regulatory Commission are that if the new system of block tariffs was not introduced, electricity would have risen by 17.74%," said the head of the regulatory body, Marko Bislimoski.

Today, the Energy Regulatory Commission held a preparatory session, after which it officially announced how much the electricity will be more expensive from July 1, depending on the offered tariffs of EVN Home, AD ESM, AD MEPSO, MEMO and Elektrodistribucija.

A man with facial bruises and a swollen eye whose children are crying and distressed. Roma community members in Romania have been sharing a video with such content through social media in recent days.

The 37-year-old Roma man from Piatra Neamț, located to the north of Bucharest, has alleged he was beaten by police officers. The reason for the beating, allegedly, was that when police stopped the taxi in which he was riding, he refused to identify himself.

The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) has republished information about the allegations from Libertatea, a newspaper in Romania. A video clip shared on social media by Roma rights activist Ciprian Necula shows the man leaving a police station, unsteady on his feet, his shirt bloodied, with bruises on his face and a swollen eye, and his children waiting for him, crying and distressed.

The man later called the emergency 112 number and reported that he had been assaulted by police. Another video shows him being taken away in an ambulance.

Police move in to arrest traveller as 40,000 from across Europe arrive in Cumbria for four-day Appleby Horse Fair while locals close school and shutter pubs

Thousands of travellers from across Europe have begun to arrive in Cumbria as the Appleby Horse Fair gets underway, with locals closing a school and shutting pubs as the festival starts.

Police said they have made arrests for theft and drug driving and been called to the scene of a crash where a horse died and three people were injured before the fair started. 

A total of 30,000 visitors are expected to congregate in the small town of Appleby-in-Westmorland and neighbouring Kirkby Stephen for the annual four-day event.

Around 10,000 of these will be members of the gypsy, Roma and traveller community, with the 250-year-old fair billed as the largest traditional gathering of the community in Europe.

Travellers have already begun to arrive in the town, with many bringing horses, ponies and carriages with them to 'the New Fair'.
