Albania: Roma as a decoration in the election campaign
There are more educated Roma in Albania, some of whom are also politically engaged. However, there is no Roma MP in the Albanian Parliament. Politicians visit Roma neighborhoods only to gain votes. The worries and fears of the Roma people are usually forgotten until the next elections.
The Roma NGO sector working on the side of the Roma, Egyptians and Ashkali fears for their future because your parliament will not have a representative to defend them. That means better housing, education and employment conditions.
That is why other politicians use that moment, during the elections they visit the Roma settlements, talk, promise, take photos. In fact, that is how they buy Roma votes, and then everything remains the same. So in their election campaigns they use them as decoration. Roma demand to be respected not only during the elections, but also after the elections.
By the way, out of the total number of inhabitants in Albania, which numbers 3 million, 20,000 are Roma.
