The Fight to Strike “Roma” From the Fashion Lexicon

In a country known for its color and flair, the Banjara people of northwest India stand out for their lush embroidery, long skirts embellished with mirrors and mother of pearl buttons, and heavy silver jewelry hanging from their wrists, their hair, ears, and noses. Banjara means traveler or wanderer, and about 1,500 years ago, some left India and migrated west, eventually making it to Europe. To this day, their descendants, who you might know as “Rom/a,” share with the Banjara a love of long, colorful skirts, head coverings, and piles of flashy jewelry. In fact, the nomadic Banjara are often called “the Roma of India.”
The Indian-American designer Viji Reddy employs Banjara artisans to hand-embroider many of the products for her artisan home collection, Alamwar, which is sold in dozens of high-end boutiques everywhere from the Hamptons to San Francisco. An avid traveler herself, when she was planning the launch of her new fashion line, she decided to call it Roma Soul. “I thought just like everyone else, it’s a cool word,” she says.

Portugal: André Ventura fined for discriminating against Roma

Chega's president, André Ventura, has been fined in €438.81 for discriminating against Roma, in relation to a publication written in August on Facebook, according to the Commission for Equality and Against Racial Discrimination (CICDR).
According to the CICDR's decision, to which Lusa News Agency accessed, the only deputy of the extreme right parliamentary party practiced an administrative offense, punishable by a fine, for “discrimination based on ethnical origin”.
The publication of André Ventura, who is also presidential candidate, was dated 21 August 2020 and the subject of a complaint by Letras Nómadas (Association for the Research and Promotion of Roma Communities) was accompanied by a graphic about the “main sources of income of individuals by age group”.
“The truth always prevails. Almost 90 percent of the Roma community lives on 'other things' than their own work. As long as we do not realise that there is a structural problem of benefits dependence, it will continue to grow uncontrollably”, wrote the leader of Chega at the time.
André Ventura has constantly attacked the Roma community in Portugal and, on 16 November, in an interview with TVI, he even put it as a condition for enabling an extreme-right government to “resolve the issue of Roma”.

Serbia: Press Council condemns persecution of family of injured boy

The Press Council calls on all colleagues to refrain from unprofessional and indecent reporting on families who have suffered a tragedy and lost a loved one.
The council also condemned the persecution of the family of the boy who died while trying to get off the city bus on Wednesday, as well as the publication of fabricated details about their lives and current situation. Circulation journalists first listened to family members on a daily basis, and then, not getting what they wanted, they fabricated the boy's grandmother's statement.
The persecution of a family that has just lost a child is not only a violation of basic professional standards, but also a violation of the reputation of our entire profession.

Ricard Valentí, activist and president of the Association of Young Roma of Gràcia "The first prejudice of the Spanish state is anti-Gypsyism"

The Gràcia district of Barcelona is home to a Roma community of centuries-old origin. Its history dates back to the 19th century and dates back to the arrival of the Valentí family in Francisco Giner Street, very close to Plaça de la Vila. Restoring antique furniture and repairing and trading automotive parts are the jobs that have traditionally ensured employment in this community. "My father made a good living distributing the old Páginas Amarillas in the affluent neighborhoods of Barcelona," explains Ricard Valentí, activist and president of the Association of Young Roma of Gràcia. He works for his community in a place that the association has in Igualada Street. Passionate about history, he has a vital milestone: "I would like to get an important archive on the murder of hundreds of thousands of gypsies during the Holocaust. It is an episode of history that is little explored and studied, that is not told in schools and that we gypsies must spread ", he states.
The association was founded in 2012, when the Association of the Roma of Gràcia, which was created in 1986, was already a memorial. But he had set the bar very high. At first we had no premises and we met in La Barraqueta in Plaça del Raspall. In 2016, we formed a consolidated board.
Our job is to collect the demands of the neighbors and get outreach and donations by participating and organizing a food bank for families who need it, especially in times like the one we live in, where the restrictions affecting street vending have left without income many families. In addition, we offer training and program talks to learn about the history and language of the Roma people. We are mainly interested in fighting anti-Gypsyism and inequality throughout Europe.
