Slovak MEP from Romani community strongly condemns police beating of Romani children in quarantined settlement as unacceptable

 MEP Peter Pollák, a Romani community member on the Crisis Team created by the Slovak Government to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, has strongly condemned an attack committed Monday by a police officer in Krompachy who is said to have used a truncheon to beat five young children from a quarantined settlement. According to the children's testimony, the officer threatened to shoot them as well.

 

The reason he used force, allegedly, was that the children were collecting wood and playing outside of the quarantine zone. "Attacking children is unacceptable," the MEP said in a video posted to Facebook.

 

"Yesterday I filed a motion with the Interior Ministry Inspection Authority to investigate this brutal beating by police officers who were striking defenseless children in Krompachy under quarantine. It is absurd for anybody in uniform to even raise their hand to children," the MEP said.

 

"This is unprofessional and what's more, it's illegal. If this was done by a police officer, he must atone for it," the MEP said.

Leskovac: Roma from Podvorce protest against power outage during corona

Due to a breakdown (disconnection) of the electricity network in a part of Buljbasha Street in the Roma settlement Podvorce 17, the households have been without electricity for six days already.

The Roma were informed by Leskovac about electricity distribution, they came and turned off the electricity.

 

According to the Roma, from this part of the settlement there are about 70, despite the requests, Leskovac Electrodistribution does not want to receive them for an interview. They are demanding payment of 10% of the debt owed to them, who are unable to pay due to their social status.

 

"In a situation where there is a corona virus and we appeal to the citizens to adhere to personal hygiene, we are not in that situation due to lack of electricity.

In front of the 29th session of the Emergency Situations Headquarters in the city of Leskovac, the Secretary of the Red Cross of this city Dragan Velickovic talked to his colleague. complained of the action by the Serbian Red Cross regarding the distribution of humanitarian packages for Roma in Leskovac and the Jablanica region. After the meeting, Velickovic literally left the building without any answer or explanation.

 

The editorial staff of ROMinfomedia will inform the Association of Journalists about this incident and the attack on the journalist, and will file a lawsuit against Dragan Velickovic with the Civil Rights Defender.
