Herdelezi

The celebration in honor of Saint George, djurdjevdan (herdelezi), is one of the most important holidays for the Roma in the Southern Balkans area. It is one of the rare holidays to be celebrated by both Muslim and Christian Orthodox Roma.

St. George, mostly portrayed as "virtuous knight" fighting a dragon, is – among others – the patron saint of soldiers, smiths, travelers, and artists, and one of the most important saints (Great Martyr) of the Eastern Church. Particularly the Serbian-orthodox Roma consider him as their patron saint. In the Orthodox church year, Djurdjevdan (George’s Day) falls on the 6th of May, but the festivities begin one day earlier. The Muslim counterpart to the Orthodox George’s Day – herdelezi – comes from the Turk name hıdrelez, which is a blending of hızır and Elias. According to legend, a meeting between the popular patron saint hızır (Arabian: el khadr – "the green one") and the prophet Elijah in the 9th century was at the origin of this once very popular Turkish spring celebration.

Today, Herdelezi is seen as the true Roma celebration in Turkey.

Both djurdjevdan and herdelezi are celebrated in different ways depending on the groups and the religion. The significance and meaning of the celebration, however, are the same. It is a spring celebration lasting several days which marks the beginning of summer and allegedly brings good fortune and wealth. In all festivities, candles, fresh twigs and "holy water" serve as symbols of life and spring.

In earlier times, both Muslim and Orthodox groups of Roma would fast the weeks before the celebration. They were not allowed to eat sheep’s meat, milk or cheese .

Today, the preparations begin on the 5th of May. The house is cleaned and decorated with candles and twigs. In Prilep (Macedonia), the Roma climb the Mount Dabnica every year on the evening of the 5th May, spend the night there, prepare dinner together and, on the next morning, bring water from a specific mountain well to their families. On the foot of the mountain (o pindo) they are welcomed with music. The spring water is said to have healing and protecting powers.

On the 6th of May – the day of the celebration proper – all participants dress festively. Each Roma family should have bought at least one sheep, in order to be able to start with the preparations in the morning. The Muslim Gurbet-Roma groups in Kumanova (Macedonia) use the blood of the slaughtered animal to paint a line on their children’s forehead. Some groups used to decorate the family’s dining room with twigs from a pear tree, to which they fastened Easter eggs and candles. Sometimes, candles, twigs and money was also fastened to the horns of the slaughtered sheep.

Apart from their religious and ritual significance, djurdjevdan and herdelezi are most of all celebrations that help keep social contact. The Muslim Roma of Aleksinac distributed the sheep’s grilled liver to their neighbors, for the souls of the deceased.

Romanian chief of local police filmed beating handcuffed Romani men as they lie on the ground

Human rights organizations have published an open letter calling on the President of Romania to fire the Internal Affairs Minister. The reason is an incident in which police in the south of the country assaulted a group of Romani men as they were lying on the ground.

News server BalkanInsight.com reports that the assault was captured on video and Romanian news server Libertatea published it online last Thursday, calling the footage an "image typical of a country governed by a military junta". News server Romea.cz is publishing the open letter in full below.

The footage shows Romanian police officers walking among the Romani men who are prone on the ground while one officer repeatedly beats one of the men with a truncheon. The blows of the truncheon and the man's howling can be heard on the audio track.

The officers in the footage shout "Stay home!" and a great deal of vulgar abuse as well. The video has sparked strong resistance from many human rights activists in Romania.

Covid-19 in Europe: First Steps to Normalizing Life

Europe is the worst affected continent with 1,447,998 deaths and 140,645 deaths

As of today, a number of European countries are beginning to repeal some of the restrictive measures introduced due to the cow-19 pandemic.

Italy, which is the hardest hit European country by the pandemic, has allowed its citizens to visit their relatives and gather in limited groups as of today. As of today, the parks will be opened, but by keeping a physical distance. Work on construction and wholesale trade has resumed.

Cafes, restaurants and bars open their kitchens, but will only sell food at home. Schools will remain closed until September under the new rules. Restrictions on movement from one area to another remain. The masks are valid for airports and stations and for public transport. As of today, the passenger flights from the airports in Campino in Rome and Peretola in Florence, which were temporarily closed due to the epidemic, have been resumed.

Spain, which also tops the list of cowboy-19 sufferers in the world, has allowed the opening of small retail outlets such as hair salons that can accommodate customers after a pre-arranged date. Bars, cafes and restaurants, as well as in Italy, will sell food and drinks only for home.

Schools remain closed until September.

According to the claims of the owner of TV BTR-Nacional, the PCER Party is blocked due to the debt to the media in the amount of 288,864 denars. Due to the delay, the interest calculated on this debt is 302,832 denars.

Also, for notary and lawyer's expenses, the debt is 13,963 denars and the calculated interest in the amount of 14,590 denars.

As court costs, it was recalled that PCER owes 14,044 denars and interest in the amount of 13,204 denars.

At the same time, PCER is indebted to Application 8,284 and interest of 7,239 denars. The total debt is 663,022 denars, but at the same time it is necessary to enter the interest in the amount of 63,000 denars and legal costs in the amount of 6,136 denars. Then it turns out that PCER is indebted over 730 thousand denars or about 12,000 euros.

Then the question arises if the PCER account is blocked, how does the party work? How are the funds that belong to the parties and are financed by the state paid off? BTR TV will continue to inform the public through legal instruments what steps will be taken in the future to find out the whole truth about the functioning of PCER.
