Porajmos survivor Philomena Franz: "I can't hate"

Sintizza Philomena Franz experienced the horrors of the Nazis firsthand: she was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp and lost almost her entire family. She talked about it mostly to young people. Now she is 100 years old.

In fact, she looks a lot younger. That's the first thought that comes to my mind when I visit Philomena Franz. She sits confidently on her cream-colored sofa, looks at me awake and is a bit indignant when I ask how she feels about this special day: her 100th birthday: "Listen, my grandfather has also gotten that old! "

I smile at the joke, but immediately shudder. Because Philomena Franz only narrowly escaped death as a young woman. Almost the whole family was murdered in Auschwitz. Of nine siblings, only she and one brother survive.

Ceremonial opening of the demolition of the pig farm in Lety u Písek

In Lety u Písek, on Friday, July 22, from 1 p.m., the symbolic start of the demolition of the former pigsty, where a concentration camp for Roma stood during the Second World War, will take place. The demolition is necessary to build a dignified memorial to honor the victims of the Roma and Sinti Holocaust in Bohemia. The first Romani internet television, ROMEA TV, will broadcast the ceremony live.

"On July 22, 2022, from 1 p.m., the construction site will be handed over to the winners of the public contract for the demolition of the premises of the former piggery in Lety u Písek. This symbolic act marks the beginning of the long-awaited demolition of the entire premises," spokeswoman Karolina Spielmannová told Romea.cz Museums of Romani culture, which the monument will build and the site will manage.

Partisan of Romani origin is among the figures proposed by the Czech Senate for state honors

Yesterday the Czech Senate revealed its list of proposed figures for state honors and Josef Serinek, who participated in the anti-Nazi resistance, has been proposed for the Medal for Heroism. After his escape from the concentration camp for Romani people at Lety u Písku, Serinek commanded a group of partisans in the Vysočina area.

The 2022 Senate list featured just eight figures, including members of the anti-Nazi resistance group "Three Kings". That is a record low number for this final year of the presidency of Miloš Zeman, who will award the state's highest honors.

Last year the Senate proposed 15 candidates. Zeman, who does not have a friendly relationship with the upper house, agreed to just two of the figures proposed.

Doctor Sava Stojanovic prevented the deportation of more than 300 Roma from Trstenik to the Nazi camps

One of the bravest doctors in Serbia - Dr. Sava Stanojevic, in World War II, saved more than 300 of his Roma patients in Trstenik.

Today, the Health Center in this city bears his name not by chance.
