Voices of the victims: Genocide, Holocaust, Porajmos, Samudaripen

The persecution of Roma under National Socialism was a genocide. This statement is important because a genocide fundamentally differs from other forms of persecution. A genocide aims to obliterate an entire group that the majority society defines as an ‘enemy’. Under National Socialism, Roma, like Jews, were stigmatised as an ‘alien race’ and it was decided to eliminate them permanently from society. This was achieved initially through social, economic and spatial isolation. In the shadow of the Second World War, physical extermination ultimately became the priority. The victims were selected not because of their individual behaviour but solely because they belonged to the minority. Children, women and men were threatened in life and limb because they were classified as ‘Gypsies’. It did not matter whether they were poor or rich, assimilated or unassimilated, young or old, fair- or dark-skinned. Whole families were systematically registered, deported and murdered. There are differing views as to what term should be used to adequately describe this crime against humanity.

President of Croatia Zoran Milanovic: "The question is, is Mr. Veljko Kajtazi really a Roma?"

On Friday in Imotski, the President of the Republic Zoran Milanović participated in the celebration of the 31st anniversary of the establishment of the 115th brigade of VV Imotski. He commented on his statement yesterday about the Roma and the climate.

"I did not fight once to protect honor and friendship when it comes to the Roma people. Did I perhaps say that Roma are thieves? Or did I spread prejudices and stereotypes? You know who steals in this country and who steals metal. Did I say that Roma steal? Should I say that Roma are doctors of science? Well, I'm not a doctor of science either. Why is Kaytazi apologizing?

Mr. Kaitazi, the first question is whether he is Roma, let's dig into how Roma he really is," said Milanovic.

"He knows very well that I know who he is and how we cooperated and what he asked of me. I was just waiting when I said that yesterday, without any bad intention, especially towards the Roma, who are a less protected part of the population. I have no regrets, there is nothing to justify. I grew up with Roma. Who is he to say that I offended someone. let him apologize to them, that's what he gets money for. Unbelievable, what a disgrace. Yes, the Roma do these things, I didn't say they steal. What happened in Croatia after he was the representative of the Roma, about their social status, education? What changed? What did he do for the Roma? for myself".

Let us remind you that on Thursday, MP Veljko Kajtazi commented on Milanović's statement about the Roma and said that the president should not contribute to stereotypes, and that he insulted the entire Roma community with that statement.

Germany is looking for workers, the influx from abroad is not working as imagined

Whether it's industry, hospitals or trades - labor shortages are a growing problem. The influx of workers from abroad does not work as imagined. Now the Immigration Law needs to be reformed, writes Danas.

It could have been a beautiful evening. "I would have a table for you," said the owner of the restaurant over the phone, "but unfortunately there is no one to cook for you."

This is not a joke. All over Germany there are not enough cooks, assistant cooks and waiters. However, labor is not only a problem in the tourism industry.

Trains are canceled because there are not enough drivers. Suitcases pile up at the airports, because there is no one to reload them. At the security checkpoints, people lose their tempers, because the queues are too long and do not reach the planes. Kindergartens withdraw admission certificates because there are not enough teachers.

MEPs say conditions for Roma in the settlements of eastern Slovakia are disgraceful, medieval, scandalous and shameful

Members of the European Parliament (EP) have described the conditions in which Romani people are living in the settlements of Slovakia as a discredit to the country and a scandal for the EU after a delegation from the EP's Committee for Regional Development visited at the invitation of Slovak MEP Peter Pollák, who is himself of Romani origin, and visited the district of Michalovce, where the municipality of Petrovce nad Laborcom has a Romani settlement on its outskirts. The MEPs paid their visit to assess how EU cohesion policy resources are being taken advantage of there to improve the inclusion of Romani residents.

Pollák said that while enough financing has been allocated from EU funds to resolve issues involving the inclusion of marginalized communities of Romani people, the problem is the lack of political will to make such investments among those responsible for local policy. "Why, for example, are hundreds of thousands of euro in EU financing being drawn in Trebišov, but not one single euro goes to solving the problems of the impoverished people in the local settlement?" he asked.
