Czech project focuses on health in socially excluded localities, Romani men live an average of 57 years and Romani women, 65

The Saste Roma (Healthy Romani People) project has begun at the International Center for Clinical Research at St. Anne's University Hospital in Brno, Czech Republic and will address how to improve health outcomes for Romani people and others living in excluded localities. The three-year project aims to increase health literacy in excluded localities, where preventive care is least accessed.

The average lifespan of men who are Romani in the Czech Republic is just to age 57, while the average lifespan of women who are Romani is to age 65.

In comparison with the majority population, that is approximately 18 fewer years of life. Romani people also suffer twice as frequently from multiple diagnoses (i.e., more than one serious ailment simultaneously).

Serbia: The first civil society platform for the social inclusion of Roma women was established

"The platform is part of the dialogue that will take place permanently between civil society organizations and representatives of public authorities, independent bodies, the Coordinating Body for Improving the Position and Social Involvement of Roma Women in Serbia and those whose mission is to work directly with citizens." said the Minister of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue Gordana Chomić, the German Organization for International Cooperation (GIZ) said.

The platform was initiated by this ministry, supported by the German development cooperation program "Inclusion of Roma and other marginalized groups in Serbia" implemented by GIZ.

The head of the economic cooperation department of the German embassy, Christian Schilling, emphasized that the involvement of Roma civil society organizations is essential for Serbia on its way to a prosperous and inclusive society.

"The social inclusion of Roma men and women is one of the most important prerequisites for Serbia to become a truly open and democratic country based on the principles of sustainable development goals. "Serbia has adopted one of the few national strategies for Roma inclusion in Europe," said Funke.

More Roma died in Jasenovac than in Auschwitz

At the memorial Roma cemetery in the village of Ustica near Jasenovac, the 11th commemoration of the Roma victims of samudaripen (genocide) during the Second World War was held on August 2. The gathering, which was attended by representatives and delegates of numerous state institutions, the City of Zagreb, local governments, the diplomatic corps, anti-fascists and minority and non-governmental organizations, was organized by the Roma Association in R. Croatia "Kali Sara" in cooperation with MP Veljko Kajtazi and the councils of the Roma national minority.

At this gathering, among other things, it was mentioned: "On this day, we remember all the Roma victims of the genocide on the territory of Europe carried out by the Nazis and their collaborators, which resulted in the suffering of half a million Roma." For ten years we gather here to commemorate the forgotten Roma victims in a dignified way and added that the biggest genocide against the Roma population was committed on the territory of NDH during the Second World War and that "this place with 21 mass graves represents the biggest execution of Roma in Europe where more Roma died than in Auschwitz".

Spain: Vigilantes set six homes of Romani families on fire in an act of collective punishment, but some European media call the incidents "peaceful demonstrations"

Media in Spain have reported that in mid-July a local mob attacked the Romani residents of a small Andalusian town, Peal de Becerro (Jaén). The attackers looted and set fire to a total of six homes inhabited by Romani people.

Roughly 30 Romani individuals had to flee their homes because of the pogrom. The death of a 29-year-old bouncer from a local nightclub is said to have sparked the vigilante violence.

According to eyewitnesses, the bouncer had been in an argument with four Romani individuals whom police are investigating. Two of his alleged assailants are in custody.

The arrest of the two suspects, however, was not enough for the deceased's friends, who called a demonstration the next day and applied the principle of collective blame to the entire local Romani community. The attacks on Romani residents were condemned by MP Ismael Cortés (Unidas Podemos), who called on the Interior Ministry to protect the Romani families.
