Vranje: The city and the Roma in a fight for a bar

The fight between the Roma from the Upper Bazaar and the city authorities for the former restaurant "Belo jagnje" on Sloboda Square in Vranje is intensifying.

The new PVC carpentry in the former restaurant "Belo Jagne" disturbed the Roma from Vranje due to the knowledge that the space was given to "someone" and thus joined the Roma associations and prominent Roma who carried out an action to allocate that space for Roma.

The city decided that the building was being renovated and put up for auction, and they were told that if they found the documents for the building there would be no problem.

But Roma say they will find those documents when the building was erected in 1937.

Outraged Roma say that "three Serb pensioners' associations in Vranje have three premises, while the legal Roma association has nothing and that it is discrimination.

The Roma remind that "the municipality of Vranje in 1995 gave these premises to the Roma, and in 1999 they were displaced people from Kosovo, who left ten years ago, and it has not been returned to the Roma.

They announce that they will also complain to the President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic.

A house in Suto Orizari, on Patrice Lulumba Street, caught fire

On March 30, at around 1 pm, a fire broke out in the municipality of Suto Orizari, where a house on Patrice Lulumba Street caught fire. The causes of this fire are still unknown. First the neighbors reacted and helped to extinguish the fire so that it would not spread, and then the fire brigade arrived.

As they say in front of the cameras of Roma Press, the people who first arrived to help and extinguish the fire say that there are no human victims but material damage has been done.

According to the report of the Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) for waste management in the period 2011-2017. In 2017, a total of 2.15 million tons of waste were generated in Serbia, of which the municipal public utility companies collected 1.80 million tons, or 83.7%.

Recycling is the youngest industry in Serbia and the only one that, according to official data, grew during the global economic crisis. This best illustrates the fact that more than 10,000 people have been employed in the industry in the last three years.

They are completely unprotected, have no rights and spend 12 hours a day picking up garbage, says Osman Balic, president of SKRUG - Roma League and adds that this organization has sent a proposal to change the Law on Waste Management, which requires: To bury waste that can be recycled in landfills, because in landfills across Serbia, material that can be used to bring income and earnings to a large number of unemployed people is permanently buried every day. New troubles for the SSO, the postponement of the census will cause new preparations

The Statistical Office is also awaiting a final agreement to postpone the census. From there they say that they do not want to comment on the agreement of the two party leaders of SDSM and VMRO-DPMNE, Zoran Zaev and Hristijan Mickoski to postpone the census until the whole process in Parliament is completed.

The Director of Statistics, Apostol Simovski says that in the interest of the census process of Macedonian citizens, he will not give statements to the media.

- We should see the proposal in action, says Simovski.

According to the Minister of Justice Bojan Maricic, the amendments to the Draft Law on Census have already been discussed at a meeting with the Director Apostol Simovski and his Deputy Ilmi Selami.

- The changes come down to two questions, that is the date of the census which is in one provision, instead of April 1 to 21 it will be written from September 5 to 30 and in the part that the diaspora can continue to be counted from March 1 when it started, by September 30th, when the field part of the census should be completed, Maricic said.

The procedure is as follows - after the Government adopts it at a session, the Census Draft-Law will be submitted to the Parliament.

- Since these are not substantial changes, I expect the Assembly to adopt it quickly. Due to the urgency of the moment before the start of the census, the new draft law on the census, just like the previous one, will have a European flag and in a shortened procedure. This way we will be able to achieve what was agreed at the meeting yesterday. In that procedure, it is not possible to block by submitting thousands of amendments, Maricic said.
