Paul Polanski has passed away, a great friend and protector of the Roma

The American writer and journalist Paul Polanski passed away on the 26th of March 2021 after a short but very difficult illness. He comes from Iowa, he spent most of his life in Europe, where he studied the movements of the Roma population. Before the end of the bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, he came to Kosovo, where after a demand from the UN, he was asked to volunteer in a Roma refugee camp. He began living in Knez village near Nish in 2006. During his residence in Kosovo, the Albanians have tried to kidnap him several times. – I am not politically oriented, but I am a witness to those events. I wrote about the refusal of KFOR to protect the minorities. Later on I was a witness of a prosecution in the spring of 2004, when all enclaves were attacked by the Albanians. I was present when the Albanians brought fuel reservoirs, they poured water in the Fushe Hospital in Kosovo and set it up in flames.

The doctors and the medical staff that were inside, were running away through the side exits, while I was standing there with police forces from the UN, which refused to intervene – said Polanski during an interview.

Nish: Organized vaccination of the Roma and the Roma settlements from Nish and the surrounding area.

The vaccination of people from the Roma community was organized in the Center for Roma Culture (RRC) in Nish. Around 100 people got the vaccine from the Chinese manufacturer or Astra Zeneca, and in the following days, teams from the Nish health center will vaccinate interested citizens in the settlements.

The vaccination point which was opened today at RRC, was visited by the Mayor Dragana Sotirovska and the Director of the Health Center, Dr. Milorad Jerkan.

- A large number of Roma decided to get the vaccine. The good thing is that the Roma population answered this call for massive vaccination. In the following weeks, the vaccinations will be organized in the other Roma settlements. Interest is good and that makes me very happy. There are many families here, the parents came and they brought their own parents and elderly persons in Nish, which makes us especially happy – said Sotirovska.

ARL: The access to primary health care is a constitutional right of the citizens of Suto Orizari

The association of Roma Lawyers from Skopje (ARL) directed a harsh reaction in relation to the dynamic with which the Ministry of Health is committed to solving the problem with the lack of family doctors in the Polyclinic in Suto Orizari.

“The Ministry of Health, in accordance with the principle of availability from the Law for Health Protection is obliged to secure access to health protection, which is geographically, physically and economically available, especially when I t comes to the health protection on a primary level. Also, the Ministry of Health is obliged to secure continuous health protection with a functionally established system of organization of health activity in all levels from primary, through secondary, to tertiary level, of the population in any time, especially in times of a global health crisis” says their announcement.

Almost 50 years since the First World Roma Congress in London in 1971: Who can the Roma today trust?

How else can we understand the fact that even 50 years after the organization of the First World Congress of the Roma in London and the start of an organized political struggle for the rights of the Roma community in a modern country that should get its vote with the help of an organization that will work on human rights and emancipation? This battle lasts 50 years, but in several segments, it still remains as it was half a century ago. The rights of the Roma seem to somehow still be "the last fiddle in the violin" and some issues are only now being raised and come to the fore.  But now, in these years of the 21st century, it is seen that they are only collateral damage in the fight against the vanities of power in those organizations that deal with the rights of minority and vulnerable groups. The question arises: "Who can the Roma trust today? When they are betrayed by those organizations that proclaim themselves as the most progressive and the most liberal? It is sad to think that these are just masks that work to raise funds and rise in the social ladder.

And that seems so real and real, that it can be seen that there is no longer a pure face and heart among people. And that is why we feel and wonder further, why are we, the Roma still rejected by the society and are left alone in our struggle.
