How Drugs Like Pervitin And Cocaine Fueled The Nazis’ Rise And Fall

Despite Hitler's anti-drug rhetoric, Nazi Germany used a little courage pill called Pervitin to take Europe by storm. It turns out it was pure methamphetamine.
Just before meeting with Benito Mussolini in the summer of 1943, Adolf Hitler was feeling seriously ill.

Still, he couldn’t ditch an Axis power meeting, and so Hitler’s personal physician injected the Führer with a drug called Eukodal — think oxycodone combined with cocaine — to perk him up.

The physician took a significant risk in doing so. After all, Hitler was prone to latching on to addictive substances and refusing to let go. But in this case, the injection seemed warranted: Hitler was doubled over with violent, spastic constipation, refusing to speak to anyone.

Hitler wasn’t alone in his use of Pervitin. Throughout that time period, everyone from German soldiers at the front lines to menopausal homemakers wolfed down Pervitin like candy.

Widespread drug use wasn’t exactly new in the country. A generation earlier, Germany was mired in large-scale drug use — that is, until Hitler rose to power in part on an anti-drug campaign. But when Hitler changed course and became an addict, the same fate befell many in his country.

By the outset of World War II, German soldiers were using Pervitin to help them storm and conquer much of Europe. The high eventually vanished, however. By the end of the war, when hubris had untethered the Nazis from reality, soldiers used drugs like Pervitin simply to survive.

Norman Ohler’s recently-published book, Blitzed: Drugs in Nazi Germany, tackles the role that drugs played in the Third Reich — and it’s overwhelming.

Introducing the ‘Rom Belong’ Programme by KCL Widening Participation Department

Throughout history the words Gypsy and Traveller have been synonymous with outliers in society. They consistently crop up as being underrepresented in education and overrepresented in the justice system.

In Department for Education reports and health surveys they are one of, if not the, lowest performing group in comparison to their peers.
This amounts to a lower life expectancy, lower expectations and ingrained stigma from the settled community. The reasons behind stigma and persecution are multi-dimensional. From the fear of otherness and ignorance to discriminatory policies and a consistently negative media image, as an ethnicity they are set apart from others.

Part of the widening participation agenda is to increase diversity at university and increasing representation from different groups of people. It is estimated that 2–3% of Romany Gypsy, European Roma and Irish/Scottish Traveller students proceed to higher education, compared to 43% of the general population. It is a small minority group, with approximations of around 200,000–300,000 Travellers in the UK, however statistics and data are scarce — a story in itself.

Universities, especially Russell Group universities, can seem as inaccessible as a different planet.

The ‘Rom Belong’ programme has been developed, with input from current students from Traveller communities, to address structural and non-structural barriers alike.

In two days, three attacks on Roma in Leskovac, arrested 7 people

A group of about 50 people with clubs, bars and knives attacked Roma in the Roma settlement Podvorce in Leskovac, according to locals from this settlement. According to them, the event occurred on Saturday and Sunday.

According to the witnesses at the event, the group first attacked the Roma from the neighborhood of Saat Maalo on Saturday, as it was repeated on Sunday at around 9 pm in the Podvorce and Slavko Zlatanovic settlements.

Three Roma were attacked and injured by the same group and in the center of the city in front of the Hotel "Belgrade". One of them is being held for treatment at the General Hospital in Leskovac, one of the witnesses said.

Roma representatives from Podvorce asked the police to take all necessary measures to stop these attacks, and the perpetrators were found and appropriately prosecuted.

According to the police in Leskovac, two attacks on Roma members were reported, and seven minors were detained.

The statement said the attack was reported on Sunday evening in a group of 5 young Roma who played basketball at the school playground. In the second attack, another five Roma were also attacked in front of a hotel and several people took part.

Due to suspicion of participating in these attacks, seven minors were arrested, according to a police statement.

Ireland: Joe Loughnane warns of anti-Traveller prejudice in run up to local elections

This is the view of People Before Profit Galway City Central candidate Joe Loughnane. He noted that there has been "much comment" in recent weeks about conditions in the Fana Glas estate in Ballybane and the number of Traveller caravans which have moved onto the site.

He said that councillors have failed to provide appropriate Traveller accommodation in Galway, despite funds being made available by the Government for the provision of Traveller accommodation.

"This has led to the serious shortage of appropriate Traveller accommodation in Galway, causing overcrowding in existing sites and forcing families to park their caravans by the side of the road and on sites such as in Fana Glas," said Mr Loughnane.

"Instead of attacking Traveller families who have nowhere else to go, councillors should be focusing on spending the money that is there to build new, culturally appropriate accommodation."
