Bitici: We are building a society in solidarity for all and we will enable full social inclusion of the Roma

Guided by the commitments arising from the Poznan declaration for the countries of the Western Balkans for the integration of Roma within the Berlin EU enlargement process, this year Macedonia prepared and adopted a new Strategy for the inclusion of Roma 2022-2030 following the guidelines given in the Strategic Framework of The EU is for the Roma, said the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economic issues, coordination of economic sectors and investments, Fatmir Bitiqi.

In addition to this, the Government's 2020-2024 program incorporates various measures for support and inclusion of the Roma, such as active measures for employment, improvement of legal regulations and formalization of work. Investing in the development of the Roma community has long-term benefits, in terms of improving social cohesion and economic status for the Roma in the long term.

He added that the Government is determined to build an inclusive society and will enable complete social inclusion for Roma citizens in Macedonia.

"We are committed to it. It is crucial that there is a political will for the real implementation of the Strategy for the Roma in the Republic of North Macedonia and for following all the European recommendations that refer to the inclusion of the Roma in the societies. The government's anti-crisis measures that were a response to the crises were intended to protect the most vulnerable categories of citizens. Since the beginning of the energy and economic crisis, the Government has given an energetic response, with the aim of leaving no one behind.

As part of the measures to support companies, it is envisaged to expand the range of companies that are beneficiaries of the guarantee scheme from the Guarantee Fund of the Development Bank, by easing the application criteria.

In 2021, 17 Roma businesses were supported through the Development Bank. At the same time, the possibility of formalizing the activity through self-employment with grants continues, where the number of Roma who form and register their own businesses within the Operational Plan for active measures is increasing, and so far about 70 people have used this opportunity," Bitici said.

The EVZ Foundation approved a solidarity budget for the work of civil society in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia in the amount of 800,000 euros

At the session held in Berlin on November 21, the Board of Trustees of the EVZ Foundation approved and passed the solidarity budget for the coming year. 800,000 euros are planned for this, 10 percent of the planned amount of financing of the EVZ Foundation in 2023. The funds can be used to specifically support projects to strengthen the commitment of refugees, establish structures for exile and other solidarity projects. The focus is on the work of Ukrainian civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations from Belarus and Russia,

EVZ Foundation supports the state and civil society in democratic Ukraine.

Since the beginning of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, the EVZ Foundation has already approved 1.572 million euros for 42 projects as emergency aid. With the money, the partners support: inside with food, medicine, hygiene products, (protective) clothing and much more. 26 of these projects provide emergency assistance to members of the Roma community in Ukraine who are facing anti-Roma sentiment.

The most common "party prey" are members of the Roma population

Party officials and activists often use illegal means to influence the electoral will of members of socially disadvantaged and minority groups. The most common "party prey", unfortunately, are members of the Roma population.

The poorest citizens are often exposed to political pressure as "easy targets". Compared to the general population, the rate of employment and education among Roma is significantly lower, and housing conditions are much worse. Combined with prejudice and marginalization, these facts make the Roma population very susceptible to pressure and manipulation by political actors.

Pressures on the Roma sometimes come from the minority parties. The pressure is often exerted by people who are Roma themselves.

Or as party activists or party collaborators, ie. Roma party trustees, or as coordinators for Roma issues, members of Roma organizations or members of the National Council, etc.

Czech TV journalist called a "gypsy bastard!" as demonstration against the public broadcaster assaults several reporters

During yesterday's demonstration against public broadcaster Czech Television in Prague, Czech Republic, reporter Richard Samko experienced racist insults while covering the march organized by Ladislav Vrábel, which was attended by several thousand people with the aim of "enabling appearances on Czech TV broadcasts". A video taken by Afrique Média includes audio of somebody in the crowd saying: "Hey, there's that bastard, dude, the gypsy one, dude."

“You’re here with us today, yeah?” a demonstrator calls to Samko as participants in the protest were lining up in Opletalova Street near the main railway station. “Thanks for calling me that,” Samko responds, to which a demonstrator then adds even more insults and threats.

“Do you have bodyguards?” the demonstrator rudely asks the reporter – who then asks why he is being addressed in the first place. “You’re not going to call me a gypsy again?” Samko asks.

“I’ve never said that in my life,” the man objects. “You’re afraid to repeat it now?” the Czech Television reporter asks.

The march then begins. “Where are you going, come with us, you shit!?” the man shouts at Samko, who has moved on with his reporting of the event.
