KFC apologizes for advertisement referencing the Kristallnacht pogrom

The German daily Bild reports that the American fast food restaurant chain KFC invited its German-language customers to commemorate Kristallnacht - the events of 9-10 November 1938 which are broadly considered to be the beginning of the Holocaust - by having crispy chicken and cheese. The company then apologized for the advertisement, considered insensitive and tasteless by many people, calling it an "error in the system".

On Wednesday, 9 November, KFC sent out a German-language message to users of its smartphone application that read: “Kristallnacht Remembrance Day – treat yourself to soft cheese with crispy chicken. Now in KFCheese!”

Roughly one hour later, the company sent out an apology message. “We are very sorry, we are immediately auditing our internal processes so this will never recur. Please forgive this error,” the message reads.

Kristallnacht refers to the large-scale pogrom committed in Nazi Germany against Jewish people on the night of 9 November 1938 and into the morning of the 10th during which hundreds of synagogues were burned down and Jewish-owned shops were looted. Approximately 100 Jewish people were killed.

The anniversary of Kristallnacht is taken very seriously in Germany. Many commemorative events and discussions are usually planned for the anniversary, commemorating the murder of more than six million Jews, over half a million Roma and others, by the Nazis.

Roma feminism is a feminist movement that promotes gender equality, the fight against social inequalities and the defense of the integration of women in various movements in society, making these processes compatible with the preservation of the culture and values ​​of the Roma people.

Throughout history, the Roma ethnic group has been despised and persecuted by various societies because of their peculiarities. However, it is one of the largest minorities in the world. Many groups still preserve a distinctive culture, with its own language, traditions or customs, where family and solidarity among its members is of the greatest importance.

Roma feminism is characterized by the struggle to overcome prejudices and discrimination against both Roma society and women, in addition to the great stigma associated with poverty.

The beginning of the Roma feminist movement in Spain began in 1990, when the first Roma feminist women's association appeared in Granada, "Asociación de Mujeres Gitanas ROMI". Since then, many other collectives have been created across the country.

"Tuesday only for Roma" - A swimming pool in Shuto Orizari with an inscription discriminated on the basis of ethnicity and skin color

A restaurant with a recreational pool in the Municipality of Šuto Orizari had the inscription "Tuesdays only for Roma" on its notice board, preventing the residents of the Roma community from recreation on the other days of the week, thus directly discriminating against them on the basis of ethnicity and skin color. , language and race.

This was determined by the Commission for Prevention and Protection from Discrimination after the complaint filed in the case of last summer when young Roma were not allowed to have fun in the restaurant's swimming pool.

 

In the complaint to the Commission, it is said that all citizens entered the complex, except for the Roma, for whom it was emphasized verbally and in writing that they were only welcome on Tuesdays.

"During the analysis, the commission took into account the inscription that was advertised on the table in the pool "Tuesday only for Roma". Despite the fact that the response denies all allegations in the complaint, the Commission considers that the very publication of an announcement with such content is probable evidence from which it can be determined that the pool directly discriminated against persons of Roma nationality due to their ethnicity and skin color in a way that they are not allowed to use an object that represents a public object and to which all citizens have access", explained the KSZD.

The commission recommended to the employees and the owner of the restaurant not to repeat this behavior towards any ethnic community and not to act with prejudices towards people of Roma nationality.

Roma in Slovakia and Slovenia: Justice on the sidelines

From an early age, Roma in Slovenia and Slovakia face widespread discrimination in various areas of their lives, including housing, education, employment, health care and policing, driven by persistent negative attitudes among the majority population towards Roma. Roma women often face multiple and intersectional discrimination based on their ethnicity and gender in both countries. The Covid-19 pandemic also amplified ongoing shortcomings in the protection of Roma rights.

We have just released a new report, which provides an overview of the current scope of discrimination against Roma, especially women, their lived experience and access to justice in Slovakia and Slovenia. Based on a combination of desk research and empirical study, namely a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with different stakeholders in both countries, it also includes a series of recommendations to achieve greater inclusion and equality in line with the stated commitment of both countries to protect their Roma populations
