The murder of Dusan Jovanovic is a shame for all of us

On October 18, 25 years ago, thirteen-year-old Roma boy Dusan Jovanovic was killed in Belgrade.

Dusan was killed only because he was a Roma.

He was beaten and kicked by "skinheads" on Beogradska street, in the city center, near Slavija. One of the killers asked Dusan for money, and then without waiting for an answer, they knocked him down on the asphalt, beat him and hit him on the head with a cobblestone. The most monstrous killer tore out part of the gutter and literally beat the boy to death in a brutal manner.

After the murder, the family moved to Mirievo, because they could not bear to live in the place where their child was killed.

After the tragic death of Dušan, the mother died first, who committed suicide out of grief, and in the meantime, the father, Alexander, also died.

Dusan's murder is a shame for all of us, and the inhumans who killed him left a stain on the face of Belgrade, Serbia and beyond.

History: Slavery of the Roma in Romania

History says that for more than 500 years the Roma were slaves in the territory of today's Romania

For almost five centuries, their slave lord brought huge profits to their masters: the landowners, the feudal aristocracy and the Orthodox Church. The status of the Roma was that of a subject people, the absolute property of their masters: the personality, faith and habits of their masters determined their entire existence.

After 1500, although the number of slaves declined drastically in Catholic and Protestant Europe—as slaves were transferred to overseas colonies to work—slavery flourished in the Romanian principalities. "In the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, it was probably the only country in Europe that had a class of people with this label of slaves," Professor Doctor Constantin Balaceanu says of Stolnica.

The legislative texts, which mention them under the double denomination—Gypsies or slaves—state that they were born slaves; that every child born to a slave mother was a slave; that their masters had the power of life and death over them; that every owner had the right to sell or offer his slaves; and that every gypsy without a master is the property of the state.

In 1600, an able-bodied Roma was worth as much as a horse. In 1682, one Roma was worth two mares with foals. In 1760, three Roma were worth as much as one house, and in 1814, the Snagov monastery sold a Roma for the price of four buffaloes. There were also cases where Roma were sold according to their weight, a barrel of honey was exchanged, or offered as a gift..

Asylum for Russian deserters in Germany?

Vibke Judit from the Pro Asylum organization told us that almost every minute a call arrives from Russia. "People are asking how to get out of the country. After the partial mobilization in Russia became known, we noticed it extremely both on social media and in relation to our teams of advisers", says Judit in a conversation with DW.

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), which is part of the German Ministry of the Interior, is responsible for asylum applications in Germany. At the request of DW, they answered that in the current year almost no increased number of requests for asylum from Russian citizens was registered, compared to the previous year. So far, there have been about 1,800 requests for asylum, while in 2021 about 2,300. The war against Ukraine that started in February did not contribute to increasing the number of asylum seekers either.

Maximilian Kahl, a spokesman for Germany's interior ministry, said the BAMF's decision-making practice regarding asylum seekers from Russia had changed since April and that "as a rule, refusal to serve military service is a reason for protection." In addition, following the Russian attack on Ukraine in February, 438 Russian citizens were admitted on humanitarian grounds. This includes members of the opposition or journalists.
