Serbia: Attitude of the State Towards the Roma in the Population Census

About 15,000 enumerators will knock on the doors of every household in Serbia during October, carrying census forms with 69 questions. The population census involves the extensive collection of data on all the inhabitants of a country and is done in almost all countries of the world, usually every ten years.

It is "the most important source of individual data on the population and housing stock of a country and, therefore, represents the backbone of national statistics," according to the website of the Republic Statistical Office (RZS). In the conversation with Mr. Balć, we will focus on important issues related to the Roma community.

Serbia is threatened with the cancellation of visa liberalization

Belgrade's visa policy was the target of sharp criticism these days at the meeting of the interior ministers of the European Union (EU), and European Commissioner Ilva Johansson said that in case of non-compliance with the Union, the suspension of the visa-free regime is not ruled out for the citizens of Serbia, writes Nova S.

The EU accuses Belgrade of contributing to the sudden increase in migrant arrivals to the EU via the Western Balkans.

The route was used mainly by Syrian, Afghanistan and Turkish migrants. But the Commission notes an increase in arrivals from Cuba, India, Burundi and Tunisia.

Bulgaria: Bride market - mothers sell their underage daughters, and only one thing determines the price

Kalaidzi is an old ancient Romani community in Bulgaria that has nurtured its traditions for centuries through a series of beliefs and customs. It is the "Roma Bride Market".

The most important thing is that the girl is innocent, so that the family can sell her for a large amount of money. Otherwise, if it is known that the girl is not innocent, she is given at the lowest possible price.

This is the only occasion when girls are allowed to interact with men outside their family.

Dating on other days or outside of this event is not allowed. Teenage girls are always accompanied by family members who watch over them carefully. Also, marriage outside their community is taboo.

Men in this market spend $7,500 to $11,300 on bargains.
