Facebook Status from Albert Black: Every third bicycle in Shutka is stolen!

On the Facebook profile of Albert Black, a status was posted which said the following words: “Today, I was in Shuto Orizari, and every third bicycle which I saw there was repainted. I rode around for a while in the nearby streets, and almost every home had a minimum of one bike, where most of them were repainted, and some of them were disassembled. I saw people with old dirty close riding on nice and new bikes. I think that most of our stolen bicycles are ending up over there. I think that by having constant police controls at the 4 following crossroads which lead to Suto Orizari, the bike thefts would be much less, at least 50%. The police should legitimize every suspect riding a bicycle to Suto Orizari, and to photograph the bicycle. In that way, after the damaged person whose bike was stolen will report said bike with its specific characteristics, the police will be immediately able to react. In order to implement this, we need 16 police officers - two per point in two 12 hour shifts. Even if it doesn’t bring any results, we must try it. Does the Ministry of Inner Affairs, or Sector for Inner Affairs – Skopje are willing to do this??”

Serbia: Legalization of houses in Roma settlements

YUROM Center from Nis with the regional council for cooperation are starting the realization of the pilot - the project legalization of 50 houses in Nis and Leskovac.

Since the enactment of the Law on Legalization of Buildings (2015) until today, very few, out of about 2 million illegal buildings, have been legalized throughout Serbia. Based on the available data, it is estimated that about 20,000 houses in Roma settlements have the status of illegal construction and that about 120,000 Roma live in them. The reasons are various, from lack of funds for legalization (tax) to ignorance of regulations, to tax evasion of the state.

The goals of the project are:

- Simpler, more efficient, faster and cheaper legalization procedure

- All illegally constructed buildings, if they meet the legal regulations, to be legalized

- To enable the owners of illegally constructed buildings to obtain legal houses that will be registered in public books, which will provide them with a higher market value, the opportunity to take a loan by mortgaging real estate

- At the same time, the owners of legal facilities will have to pay property tax, which will create conditions for better landscaping and arrangement of space, rational use of construction land and eventually, will lead to the legalization of entire Roma settlements.

Support Roma Pupils Playing Music Instruments

Musically talented Roma children and youth have lack of access to musical instruments and music education due to living in poverty and social exclusion. The Roma Rock School (RRS) is working with Roma pupils from the biggest Roma settlement in Europe, Shuto Orizari - N. Macedonia using an unique curriculum combining Rock with Roma traditional music. Make your donation to support this socially innovative program of securing free music education and future music career of Roma children and youth.

The Roma children have the lowest rate of school attendance and highest level of dropout in North Macedonia, considering deep poverty of their families. The access to private musical schools and education is even more difficult considering the high cost for artistic education and purchasing musical instruments. Unfortunately, the 3 years' project of RRS supporting Roma children has ended. Your donation will secure at least 30 talented but poor Roma children to continue their music education.

Ten families who lost everything in the fire, for now are without a permanent solution.

Two weeks after the fire on Alexander Medvedev Street in Nis, the issue of 50 homeless people cannot be permanently resolved. After the big fire from their homes, they were left with only arrears. The proposal to use city apartments and pay rent has upset citizens who already have unpaid bills, most live on social assistance or have a minimum income and can not set aside an additional 70 euros per month for rent. Fearing for their livelihood, some are afraid of being left on the street. Some of them are housed in the family, while others are in a safe house in the center of "Mara".

A large fire broke out on Alexandra Medvedeva Street in Nis in the evening, around 7.40 pm, in which ten families were left without their homes. The Nis Police Department said no one was injured in the blaze.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started suddenly, and it is presumed that the chimney of one of the barracks caught fire. The tenants, fleeing the fire, ran into the street without having time to take their personal documents or money with them.
