Montenegro: Elvis Berisha – The Roma never caused any wars!

A police academy has been built at the place where Elvis Berisha’s house was burnt, and then demolished together with the whole Roma settlement. This is part of the childhood of this criminologist and Roma activist whose family ran away from persecution from Danilovgrad in 1995.

- I remember when the inspector got in our house and pointed the electric taser, we the children were lying on the ground like sardines, he said – you have to leave the settlement right now! We were crying and left our home early in the morning.

As the President of the NGO – Phiren Amenca and also a member of the UPRE initiative he mentioned that the persecution of the Roma in Danilovgrad happened after the rape where several members of the Roma community were involved in the incident. The state then, after being pressured by the UN paid a compensation to 70 families and yet they remained under the radar of the public.

- It was a scary day. All of the locals gathered and burned down our houses. The police was just observing this horror from the sides and didn’t react. Several older people tried to negotiate, but there was no success.

Re-announcement for registration of candidates for regional enumerators, 20 Roma are missing

The State Statistics Office re-announces the call for regional enumerators for the Population Census 2021, for the Census regions which lack enumerators. The call will last from the 18th to the 20th of March 2021. We appeal to every interested person to apply for the call and in that way to contribute in the creation of their own future.

The top priority of the State Statistical Office, in addition to the successful implementation of this most important statistical operation, is its safe implementation from a health perspective. Czech TV finds MP is still a landlord trafficking in poverty, overcharging Romani tenants for squalid properties who have nowhere else to go

Czech MP Lubomír Volný is continuing to make money on the most impoverished Romani residents of the excluded locality in Ostrava-Přívoz where he owns two buildings that he is neglecting. Currently he has been drawing attention to himself by refusing to follow the rules in place during the pandemic and has become a star among those opposed to wearing facemasks - and paradoxically, many Romani men and women are praising him for that on social media.Just as he did two years ago, the MP is responding to the critique of his exploiting impoverished people for his own benefit by threatening to evict his Romani tenants. That was his response when he was questioned by reporter Martin Mikule on the Czech Television program "168 Hours" (168 hodin).

Mikule asked the MP repeatedly whether he was ashamed to rent housing that is absolutely substandard to these tenants. "If you, as a public broadcasting reporter, ask me one more time whether I'm ashamed because they have been destroying the housing, I won't extend their rental contracts and it will be your fault," the MP said on camera, to which the reporter responded that Volný was using the tenants as a "human shield".

The European Commission has proposed the introduction of Covid passports for free travel within the EU

The European Commission has proposed the introduction of vaccination certificates, which will allow the 450 million inhabitants of the European Union to travel freely through the 27 member states this summer. The plan, to be discussed at a summit of EU leaders next week, envisions the creation of so-called passport passports that would facilitate travel from one EU member state to another. This topic has been discussed for weeks and there has been division among the members. The idea was most strongly pushed by those whose economies are heavily dependent on tourism, such as Greece, Spain and Portugal, in order to avoid testing and quarantine when entering countries. At the other end of the spectrum were countries such as France and Germany, which considered it premature to introduce a Covid Passport, calling it discriminatory because the majority of EU citizens have not yet been vaccinated against Covid-19. The new document will be called Digital Green Certificate and will be given free of charge to all EU citizens who will provide proof that they have received a vaccine against covid-19, but also those who have a negative test or have been exposed to the virus.
