Young Roma still on the sidelines: Only four out of ten complete secondary education

Primary and secondary education are compulsory in Macedonia, but in Roma settlements only three quarters of children of the appropriate age start in the first grade, less than two thirds continue in the sixth, and about one third enroll in secondary. The data from the labor market are also devastating. The non-governmental organization "Romaversitas" has long noticed that many children do not enroll in high school, so they directly help to return them to the educational process. First, they started with higher education scholarships, and later 100 high school students finished high school with their financial aid, tutoring and career development tips. Romaversitas makes sure that high school students get the right internship. Only 36.9% of Roma manage to get a high school diploma. Or, out of every 100 children, about 79 will finish the fifth grade. Some of them either do not continue their education at all or will drop out of the upper grades, so only 56 out of every 100 children will finish the ninth grade. Not everyone who completes primary school continues in high school, so only 37 out of every 100 Roma will receive a high school diploma. In the database of the Employment Agency, only this year, 14,208 Roma are registered as unemployed. Compared to other smaller ethnic communities, Roma are the most numerous in terms of unemployment, despite the fact that according to the latest census, they are not the most numerous smaller ethnic community. As a vulnerable group, Roma qualify for the Employment Agency's Operational Plan for Active Employment Programs and Measures.

Serbia: A fake call in the name of the Help Organization, the citizens should not fall for that call!

The citizens and the broader public are warned that several unknown individuals are calling their citizens and present themselves as employees of the German Organization Help – Hiffe zur Selbsthilfe, offering them help. The individuals who are falsely representing themselves as workers for help are asking the invited citizens for their financial situation, means of security and are heavily disturbing the privacy of the invited individuals. They also insist on paying a tax for participation and checking of the credit balance which “Help” does not do at all. Otherwise, this is not a practice in the operation of "Help" anywhere in the world.

We are kindly asking the citizens who have received or will receive such offers, to not be victims and to report the case to the police, as well as to freely contact the Help office.

Romani MP in Spain proposes improving Roma access to education and adding anti-Romani bias to the Criminal Code

The Reuters news agency reports that roughly a million Romani people live in Spain today, where they are known as Gitanos. For centuries they have been subject to persecution and to deeply-rooted ostracism and prejudices against them in society.

As a consequence of their unequal position in society, members of this group today are grappling with high unemployment, poverty, and bad housing conditions. Things may be looking up now, though, as a proposal aimed at tackling the deep-rooted inequality suffered by Spain’s Roma people won cross-party parliamentary backing at the end of last year.

The new proposal seeks a state pact to combat discrimination against Romani people and proposes measures such as improved Romani access to education, an end to shanty towns, and for "antigitanismo" (antigypsyism) as a kind of motivation to be added to the country’s Criminal Code. The Government must respond to the proposal within six months, according to Ismael Cortes, one of three Romani representatives in Parliament -- the highest-ever number.

Europe’s silent scandal: Romani children in state care institutions

While for centuries, racist folktales warned children not to wander into the woods lest they get ‘snatched by Gypsies’, the historical reality is quite the reverse.  It is Romani children who have been kidnapped by the authorities and separated from their parents; kidnapped and placed in orphanages by authorities bent on forced assimilation, or in the case of the Nazis and their allies, gruesome experimentation and annihilation.  In the democratic 21st Century, disproportionate numbers of Romani children are removed from their biological families and placed in institutional state care.

The ERRC new report Blighted Lives, which builds on a decade of fact-finding and legal challenges to such discriminatory practices across a dozen countries, found that very many at-risk Romani families do not have access to social supports, and preventative measures remain scarce, often non-existent in deprived regions where the need is greatest.

Despite the declared lack of ethnically disaggregated data, the research shows that for example in Slovakia, where Roma account for 6-8% of the total population, an estimated 63% of children in state care were of Romani origin. Roma in Romania make up 8.32% of the total population, but the overrepresentation of Romani kids in care ranged from 35% to 75% according to the region.
