Hundreds of Roma families in Struga are looking for social housing for a decent life

Residents of the Roma settlement in Struga complain that the conditions in which they live are unbearable. Improvised barracks and dilapidated houses surrounded by waste, unpaved and muddy streets, this is the picture of the Roma along the river Crn Drim. They want to be given social housing in order to have a dignified life.

Additionally, what the Roma population faces every day is the problem of difficult social cases that are struggling and thinking about what to do today in order to bring some income to the family. They complain that the authorities only promise them better living conditions but nothing of the sort yet.

The Joint Stock Company for Housing and Business Premises is of the opinion that so far there is no project for construction of social housing in Struga.

Roma musicians protested in Kicevo for the return of weddings

A few days ago, a protest was held on the town square in Kicevo by Roma musicians from this town, who want the weddings to return so that they can earn a living.

-We provided our existence only through music by playing weddings and other celebrations. For the past 12 months we have been left without basic income and we are already on the brink of subsistence. If things do not change and weddings do not start again, we will experience a complete financial collapse. Our voice should be heard by the Government, to lend a hand and understand that we are people who have the right to life, said Idaver Redzeposki.

In addition to Roma musicians, the protest was attended by a number of singers from other ethnic communities, as well as entire music groups, who supported the musicians because, they say, they are part of the vulnerable category of citizens who can not earn as in normal circumstances.

Martina Naumovska is the only one who completed two years of studies in Romani language

Getting to know a new culture, way of life and language different from hers has always been a challenge for Martina Naumovska. That is why she decided to get acquainted with the Romani language, as the language of a community that is an integral part of us and has its own history, culture and traditions. Martina is still the only graduate student to have completed four semesters in Romance at the Department of General and Comparative Literature at the Faculty of Philology in Skopje. There she obtained a diploma in Macedonian language and South Slavic languages, ie Department of Macedonian Language and Literature - teaching direction.

However, the Romance department was quickly abolished, so Martina is one of the first three students to attend those lectures and believes that this department should be returned.

At the beginning of the first semester, we enrolled only three students who had chosen this language, and the group was led by the respected professor Dr. Ljatif Demir. There was little interest because it was the first year since the Romani language entered as an integral part of the Department of General and Comparative Literature. Although we were a few students at the beginning, in the end I was the only one who completed my two-year studies in Romance. The two-year studies included teaching the language, history and culture of the Roma, and thus the colloquia and exams that were within this subject were an integral part - says Martina.

Martina's love for the Romani language was born while she was in the primary school in her native Kicevo. At that time, mother tongue instruction was introduced for students from the smaller ethnic communities, and she was very interested in it and it sounded unusual to her, so the whole story started even then.

According to her, the interest in learning the Romani language is greater than ever and should not remain only on the margins of primary education.

- From personal experience, from my work as a teacher so far and from the large number of students who choose and follow the subject Language and Culture of the Roma, I can say that the interest is great. Every child stands even stronger on their own feet and has more self-confidence by learning their language, tradition and history in schools. The Department of Romance, as I have emphasized before, I believe and hope that it will soon get its place at one of the faculties of teaching and that new staff with new ideas and reliable realizations will emerge from there. "Children deserve to enjoy that right," Martina said.

The census officially begins with the census of the diaspora on Monday

With the census of the diaspora on Monday, March 1, the census officially begins. Emigrants will be able to find the self-enumeration application on the website of the State Statistical Office, and a link to it will be posted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The emigrants will be able to get help for filling in the application from all the diplomatic-consular missions that have already received instructions and have opened telephone lines that will be available to them 24 hours a day.

"The application is available in eight languages. "Those who have been away for a long time, if they have a problem with understanding the language, will be able to register in English," said the Minister, Bujar Osmani, and explained that expatriates will be able to register from a mobile phone.

Minister Osmani stressed that the results of the census of emigrants are of exceptional importance for the country.

The director of the State Statistical Office, Apostol Simovski, said that the application is easy and simple to fill in, identical to the one that will be registered in the country, and the data from the emigrants are waiting until March 31.

"The census process will be through a web application that is simple. Anyone abroad can easily fill it out. The only requirement is to log in with your email address. There is no access to the application from Macedonia, and for the data that will be left, measures will be taken to protect them.

The census of five more categories of citizens starts on Monday, ie in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense the census in the Army begins, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice the census of persons in penitentiary institutions begins, and in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in the same period the persons in the correctional facilities are also enumerated.
