Czech NGO director tells ombudsman he should resign for refusing to acknowledge discrimination against Roma

According to the director of the Open Society (Otevřená společnost) organization, Marta Smolíková, the Czech Public Defender of Rights (ombudsman), Stanislav Křeček, should resign for refusing to acknowledge the existence of discrimination against Romani people. She told him so on a program broadcast by the Proglas 13+ radio station.

An open letter signed by representatives of organizations that promote human rights, people facing adversity and the Romani minority called on Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) and members of the lower house to distance themselves from the anti-Romani remarks made by the ombudsman and was raised as a topic of discussion. "During the 30 years that we have been doing the integration of Roma, nothing has changed. The situation keeps getting worse - more Romani children dropping out of school, many not preparing themselves for future employment, unemployment growing, excluded localities increasing. However, when I critically mention that we must not continue this, that we have to change the situation, it's considered an anti-Romani attack. That is an example of where the discourse on the integration of Romani people finds itself at this time," the ombudsman said when asked to comment on the open letter.

Singer Ida Kellarová – an ambassador for Romany culture

Ida Kelarová is a singer, musician and choirmaster, who performs some of the best Romany music to come out of the Czech Republic. On the occasion of Ida’s 65th birthday we are offering you some of the best of Ida Kellarová’s music.

In addition to her concerts, the singer organizes international workshops, multi-ethnic projects, the Roma festival Gypsy Celebration and helps found choirs with a repertoire of Romany songs. In 1999, together with her current partner Desiderio Dužda, she formed the group Romano Rat (Roma Blood), with which she tours many countries of the world.

Paradoxically it was years before Ida discovered her Romany roots and drew inspiration from Roma culture and music. Because of the prejudices against the Romany minority, her father Koloman Bitto, a Romany from southern Slovakia with incredible musical talent, took the drastic step of covering up his family’s origin. He believed he was doing the right thing for his three daughters and giving them a better start in life. Since the girls were light-haired and Ida herself was a blond baby the deception went undetected for years.

Today her Roma legacy has become an important part of Ida Kellarova’s life and she works hard to help talented Romany children living in excluded localities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Strasbourg court: Bulgarian courts allow Volen Siderov's speech, which is extremely stigmatizing for Roma and Jews

On February 16 this year, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg ruled in the cases of Behar and Gutman v. Bulgaria (application № 29335/13) and Budinova and Chaprazov v. Bulgaria (application № 12567/13), concerning systematic anti-Semitic and anti-Roma speech of Volen Siderov before and soon after his election as Member of Parliament in 2006

The court's ruling comes after the Supreme Court of Cassation upheld the refusals of the Sofia District Court and the Sofia City Court in August 2012 to convict Siderov of discriminatory speech under the Protection against Discrimination Act in August 2012.

In both cases, the ECtHR found that the Bulgarian courts had not ensured the right balance between Volen Siderov's freedom of expression and the applicants' right not to be discriminated against. Moreover, the Court emphasizes the obligations of national authorities to combat racial discrimination, which includes discrimination on ethnic grounds.

The court found that national courts had downplayed Siderov's statements to stigmatize Jews and Roma in Bulgaria, and instead identified the statements as a legitimate debate on issues of public importance.
